FRANTISEK MIRGA AND HIS SHOCKING CRIME IN NEWPORT
A disturbing case of child sexual assault has shocked the community of Newport, as Frantisek Mirga, aged 39 and residing on Corporation Road, was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl at her family home.Mirga appeared before Cardiff Crown Court where he received a significant prison sentence for his heinous act.
The incident occurred on November 13, 2022, and has left a lasting impact on the young victim.
Mirga, who hails from Czechia, was under the influence of vodka that evening and was staying at a friend’s house due to his inability to drive.
During his stay, he was residing in the living room of the residence.
The young girl, feeling thirsty, came downstairs to get a glass of water when Mirga unexpectedly invited her into the living room.
It was there that he committed the assault, raping her without her consent.
The court was presented with two devastating victim impact statements that detailed the profound emotional and psychological toll that Mirga’s actions have inflicted upon her.
The first statement, read aloud on February 24, revealed how the girl now lives in constant fear and feels deeply horrified about what might happen to her in the future.
She expressed a complete loss of trust in men, feeling embarrassed and overwhelmed by her new sense of vulnerability.
The statement depicted her struggle with daily emotions, describing how she no longer feels like herself.
She confessed to crying every day, feeling depressed, torn, and broken.
The trauma has led her to experience frequent flashbacks, heightening her anxiety and sense of helplessness.
A second impact statement, dated June 3, further emphasized the girl’s inability to cope with her distress.
She described harboring intense anger and sadness, waking up terrified by flashbacks that haunt her sleep.
She admitted that she feels powerless against these memories and fears her ongoing emotional turmoil.
Mirga’s criminal history includes prior convictions unrelated to the current offense.
His past crimes include handling stolen goods in June 2015 and a public order offence in September 2012, both in the UK.
Additional convictions occurred in Czechia, where he was previously convicted of theft in October 2002 and illegally entering a private property in September 2004.
During the court proceedings, Mirga’s legal representative described mitigation efforts as “pithy,” pointing out that his partner and sister are experiencing health issues, which might have influenced his circumstances.
The court also acknowledged Mirga’s expressed remorse, particularly noting his understanding that UK laws differ from those in Czechia.
It was also brought to light that the defendant has two young granddaughters, which added context to the seriousness of his actions.
Judge David Morgan delivered the sentencing, emphasizing the predatory nature of Mirga’s conduct.
He highlighted that Mirga’s intention was clear from the outset — to take advantage of his young victim at the earliest opportunity.
The judge pointed out that Mirga had previously sent inappropriate messages, suggesting a pattern of predatory behavior.
He noted that the girl was entitled to feel safe in her own home, yet Mirga knew she was only 15, with the UK’s age of consent being 16, and that there was a significant age gap of 22 years between them.
The severity of the offense was underscored by the court’s conclusion that Mirga posed a “significant risk to members of the public, young girls in particular.” As a result, the judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison for the rape conviction, with a serve of seven years behind bars followed by an additional three years on license.
In addition to his imprisonment, Mirga was subjected to several court orders designed for ongoing protection.
A restraining order prohibits him from contacting his victims, entering any premises occupied by her or approaching within 100 metres of her residence.
Furthermore, a sexual harm prevention order was issued, preventing him from living in the same household as any female under 16 or entering one without explicit permission from guardians or social services.
Mirga is also required to register as a sex offender, marking the long-lasting consequences of his criminal behavior and ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
