FIONTAN GREANEY SENTENCED IN FLINTSHIRE FOR REPEATED CHILD INDECENCY OFFENSES
A man from Bryn Heulog in Flintshire, Fiontan Greaney, has been sentenced to prison after being found in possession of indecent images of children once again.The case was heard at Mold Crown Court on a recent Tuesday, where the court addressed the serious nature of his offenses and the repeated violations that led to his incarceration.
Greaney, aged 35, had previously admitted to three separate charges involving the creation of indecent images of minors.
These charges spanned across different categories, including A, B, and C, with Category A representing the most severe level of indecency.
Prosecutor Karl Scholz outlined to the court that in February 2019, Greaney had already been sentenced for similar offenses, receiving a three-year community order intended to monitor and rehabilitate him.
However, despite this prior intervention, Greaney's offending behavior persisted.
In November 2022, authorities conducted an unannounced visit to his residence in Bryn Heulog, during which they examined his electronic devices.
Initial checks on his devices revealed filenames that raised suspicion, prompting the seizure of his computer and external hard drives for further investigation.
Forensic analysis of these devices uncovered a disturbing collection of images and videos.
Among the findings were two still images classified as Category A, indicating the most serious form of child exploitation material.
Additionally, there were two images and three videos at Category C, along with 313 images and six videos also categorized as C.
The forensic team also discovered a total of 844 images that suggested a sexual interest in children, highlighting the extent of the material stored on Greaney's devices.
When Greaney was arrested in September of the previous year, he maintained his innocence, denying any possession or downloading of such images.
His defense attorney, Trevor Parry Jones, described Greaney as an unusual individual, noting that he had a history of requiring assistance during his school years.
The lawyer mentioned that Greaney's mother, who was present in court, was visibly distressed and believed her son might have ADHD or be on the autism spectrum, although he had never been formally diagnosed.
Parry Jones also explained that Greaney suffered from mobility issues due to a muscular-skeletal condition.
The defense argued that Greaney was remorseful and expressed a desire to cease his harmful behavior, emphasizing that he was taking positive steps toward understanding the impact of his actions.
His mother reportedly believed he was beginning to grasp the importance of appropriate conduct and was making efforts to change.
At the hearing, the judge, Rhys Rowlands, addressed Greaney directly, recalling that in 2019, he had been subject to a community order with specific rehabilitation requirements aimed at reducing his risk to children.
Unfortunately, the judge noted, Greaney had continued offending despite previous orders.
The pre-sentence report painted a bleak picture, indicating a lack of insight and ongoing denial of any sexual interest in children.
Given these circumstances, the court determined that community-based punishment would be insufficient.
Greaney was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
