ELGIN MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING MOTHER AND CALLING HER A WITCH
An offender named Finley Wood, aged 46, appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court after admitting to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards his mother, whom he had moved in with following her husband's death.Wood was reported to have shouted, sworn at, and called his mother a “witch,” urging her to die, particularly when she raised concerns about his drinking.
His mother had to barricade herself in her room to escape his anger.
Earlier, Wood’s behavior included knocking on her door while searching for keys and exhibiting aggression when intoxicated.During a previous court hearing, a prosecutor stated that Wood’s mother was described as “very distressed and crying” when he started arguing with her after she told him no to his demands.
She also described him as having an alcohol problem and being aggressive when drinking, which frightened her.
Wood called her a “f*****g witch” and suggested it was “about time she was dead.”His defense solicitor, Megan Lee, explained that the fallout from that incident and his mother’s wish for a non-harassment order had left Wood “genuinely heartbroken and moved to tears.” She detailed that Wood had previously enjoyed a successful and lucrative career, which had fallen apart in recent months prior to moving to be with his mother, contributing to his distress and behavior.
She emphasized that Wood was devastated by his actions and the damage done to his relationships.
The court sentenced Wood to one year of supervision with alcohol counseling ordered.
Additionally, a non-harassment order was granted, prohibiting Wood from contacting his mother for the next five years.
The sheriff remarked that it was significant that his mother wanted no further contact, highlighting the seriousness of the case and her wishes.
