FILMON ANDMICHAEN SENTENCED FOR MURDER OF PREGNANT WOMAN IN BIRMINGHAM'S LADYWOOD

A tragic and violent incident has culminated in the conviction and sentencing of Filmon Andmichaen for the murder of Liwam Bereket, a pregnant woman from Birmingham. The events unfolded on the 1st of August, 2023, in the Ladywood area, where Andmichaen lured Liwam to a secluded spot before launching a brutal attack.

According to court proceedings, Andmichaen, aged 31, inflicted fatal stab wounds upon Liwam, who was six months pregnant at the time. The young woman was reportedly looking forward to becoming a mother, but her life was tragically cut short in a violent confrontation. The relationship between the two had been strained, especially after Andmichaen discovered that Liwam was pregnant. He demanded she undergo an abortion, a request she refused, which appears to have escalated the situation.

Following the assault, Andmichaen left Liwam alone in the woodland, where she succumbed to her injuries. The investigation revealed that he returned home and later confessed to his brother that he had assaulted a woman. Nearly two hours after the stabbing, Andmichaen contacted the police, claiming that the incident was an accident and that he had not intended to cause harm. However, authorities quickly linked him to the scene, where they found Liwam with fatal injuries. Both she and her unborn baby girl died at the scene, marking a devastating loss for her family and the community.

Witnesses and friends of Liwam Bereket provided crucial testimony during the investigation, describing instances of abuse and aggressive behavior by Andmichaen towards her. CCTV footage captured the couple arriving at Freeth Street and then disappearing into the woodland area, which would be the last time Liwam was seen alive. Surveillance images also showed Andmichaen returning to his vehicle approximately fifteen minutes later and driving away from the scene.

During the trial at Birmingham Crown Court, Andmichaen maintained that the deaths were accidental, asserting that he had no intention of harming Liwam or her unborn child. Nonetheless, evidence indicated that he deliberately prevented her from calling for help by taking her phone after the attack, which was later discovered in the trunk of his car. The court found his claims of innocence unconvincing and convicted him of murder and the death of her unborn baby.
