BIRKENHEAD MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT ABUSE AND DOMESTIC ASSAULT
A man named Fethi Chebbi, aged 36, of Argyle Street in Birkenhead, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on April 6, 2022.He was convicted of a series of abusive acts towards his partner, including dragging her by the hair so violently that her extensions were torn from her head, and burning a lit cigarette out on her arm.
Chebbi reacted with violence and aggression over a period, notably attacking her after drinking alcohol in July 2020, when he burned her skin with a cigarette and asked her if she wanted to feel pain.
In October 2020, following an argument about her staying up, he flipped a coffee table, snapped her mother’s phone in half, and dragged her by the hair again, with such force that her hair extensions ripped out, before hitting her with slaps and punches.
He also tore her fingers back to take her phone as she tried to call the police.
Chebbi fled when police approached but was later arrested six weeks after the incident.
Initially pleading guilty to criminal damage, he only admitted to the assault on the day of his trial.
The court heard he has a history of previous convictions, including domestic violence-related offenses, and claimed to police that he acted in self-defense.
The judge described his actions as inexcusable and cowardly, emphasizing the long-lasting impact on the victim, who described herself as feeling like "a shell" after the abuse.
Chebbi was sentenced to 20 months of imprisonment and, as he was led away, yelled that the sentence was "a joke".
