FERNANDO CAMUTARI SHOCKS SHEFFIELD WITH RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE
In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Sheffield, a young woman’s quick thinking and presence of mind led to the arrest of Fernando Camutari, who was found guilty of heinous sexual crimes.The incident occurred in the early hours of 8 June 2019, when Camutari, aged 41 at the time, lured a 21-year-old woman back to his residence on Mordaunt Road after a night out in the city.
While at his home, Camutari subjected the woman to a violent and sexually assaultive attack.
During the assault, the woman managed to dial 999 from Camutari’s phone, a move that proved crucial in her rescue.
The emergency call handler who received the call could hear her pleading with Camutari to stop, a distressing detail that underscored the severity of the attack.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, police officers arrived at the scene on Mordaunt Road just as Camutari and his victim were stepping outside the property.
The officers arrested Camutari immediately, bringing an end to the assault and beginning the legal process that would follow.
Initially, Camutari denied the allegations, claiming that the woman had not been inside his house.
However, CCTV footage contradicted his account, showing them entering the property together and leaving within minutes.
Despite his denials, forensic evidence collected from the scene confirmed that sexual activity had taken place, further strengthening the case against him.
Following his arrest, Camutari was formally charged on 17 September 2020 with rape and two counts of sexual assault.
The subsequent trial lasted four days, during which the jury carefully examined the evidence presented.
Ultimately, they returned guilty verdicts on all charges, leading to his immediate sentencing.
In sentencing, Camutari received six years and nine months in prison for the rape conviction.
Additionally, he was sentenced to three years for each of the sexual assault charges, with these sentences to run concurrently with his primary sentence.
