FAWZI OMAR SENTENCED IN EXETER AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON WOMAN

A man was convicted and sentenced for sexually assaulting a woman as she was walking home in Exeter city centre. Fawzi Omar, aged 27, was sentenced to four years in prison with an additional four years on extended licence. Exeter Crown Court was told that Omar, a Sudanese national of no fixed address, targeted the unidentified woman during the early hours of Wednesday, May 8. He approached her, grabbed her, and carried out a sexual assault despite her protests, telling him she did not wish for this to happen.

The assault was caught on city centre CCTV footage, which allowed authorities to track Omar across the area. However, he eventually disappeared from view and was no longer identifiable. Police continued their search but were unable to locate him immediately. Following the circulation of his image, a city centre CCTV operator recognized a man matching Omar’s description at 1:25 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11. An officer responded quickly to South Street and arrested Omar on suspicion of sexual assault.

Omar admitted to the offence and appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Friday, November 22, where he was sentenced. Detective Inspector Paula Trevett commented: “We are happy that Fawzi Omar is now behind bars for a horrific attack carried out on a complete stranger. We’d like to commend the bravery of the victim in this case for helping ensure Omar was brought to justice.”

She added, “This is another example of outstanding work carried out by Exeter officers – response, neighbourhood, CCTV, and CID. Omar was previously unknown to police and remained at large for four weeks after the offence. It was thanks to the diligent work of one of the city centre CCTV operatives, who recognized him based on clothing and gait when he was walking around Exeter, that Omar was arrested.”

Inspector Trevett explained that Omar initially denied the charges. However, forensic evidence quickly linked him to the crime scene when DNA collected from the victim matched his exactly. “Omar’s DNA came back as an exact match with the swabs taken from the victim,” she confirmed. She praised the teamwork involved, stating, “This example of fantastic teamwork demonstrates the drive we all have to make the streets of Exeter safer for women and girls.”
