ETHAN BIRCH FROM WARRINGTON CAUGHT IN CHILD SEXUAL PREDATION AT WIDNES RUGBY CLUB
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and child exploitation, Ethan Birch, a 20-year-old resident of Warrington, was apprehended after traveling to Widnes with the intent to meet an underage girl for sexual purposes.Birch arrived at the car park of the Widnes rugby league club on Lower House Lane on a Friday, specifically January 21, carrying a collection of children’s underwear, including knickers and crop tops, along with a fresh set of boxer shorts for himself.
His visit was the culmination of a ten-day online communication period during which he exchanged messages containing sexual content and shared explicit images of himself.
Unbeknownst to Birch, the individual he believed to be an 11-year-old girl was actually an adult decoy, part of an undercover operation designed to catch predators attempting to exploit minors online.
The case was brought before Liverpool Crown Court, where it was revealed that Birch initially made contact with the decoy, known as “Izzy,” on the social media platform Chat Avenue.
His profile was aimed at users aged nine to nineteen, and after some exchanges, the conversation moved to WhatsApp.
During their chats, Izzy claimed to be 11 years old and in foster care.
Despite this, Birch persisted in his pursuit, asking her not to block him if she revealed her true age.
He then disclosed personal details, including his name, age, residence, and occupation, even sharing his phone number.
The court heard that Birch’s initial messages were seemingly innocent, with him asking “how are you?” but quickly turned more inappropriate as he complimented her, calling her “gorgeous” and asking if she “loved” him.
Birch’s messages soon took a sexual turn.
He offered to help her with her maths homework but then expressed a desire to do “something naughty together” and repeatedly asked to see her underwear.
Despite her refusals, he made numerous demands for explicit pictures, escalating the sexual nature of his messages.
He even sent a selfie of himself in boxer shorts, further demonstrating his intent.
As the grooming continued, Birch employed manipulative language, instructing her not to tell anyone about their conversations and asking, “do you want to make me happy?” He began asking intimate questions and attempted to instruct her on how to perform sexual acts on herself, claiming she was his “girlfriend” and that she should show him her underwear.
When she questioned his motives, Birch responded, “I’m telling you because you’re my girlfriend.” Further crossing boundaries, Birch sent a graphic image of his genitals and a video of himself performing a sexual act.
He professed his love for her, claiming he would “never leave her,” and then shifted to making more explicit, penetrative sexual requests.
Izzy expressed her fear, pleading, “Please don’t ask, it’s scary to do that.” Plans to meet at a McDonald’s in Widnes were discussed, but Birch initially hesitated, claiming he shouldn’t be talking like this to anyone under 18 and that his actions were wrong.
Despite this, he persisted with the plan to meet at the Widnes rugby club car park.
When Birch arrived, he was confronted by members of a group called “Cobra UK,” who contacted Cheshire Police.
Officers responded swiftly, arresting Birch at the scene.
During a search of his vehicle, police discovered children’s underwear, including pairs believed to be for girls aged 12 to 14, along with crop tops and a clean pair of underwear that appeared to belong to Birch himself.
Birch remained silent during police interviews, offering no comment to questions.
He later pleaded guilty to ten charges, including five counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity, two counts of attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act, attempting to meet a child following grooming, attempted sexual communication with a child, and attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual communication.
Judge Brian Cummings, QC, addressed the court, questioning how such a situation could occur given the sentencing ranges for the most serious charges, which exceeded the maximum two-year sentence for non-immediate terms.
Citing recent case law, the judge noted that grooming offenses involving adult decoys that have progressed this far typically warrant only a small reduction in sentence.
Ultimately, Birch was sentenced to four years and eight months in a young offenders institute.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect indefinitely unless a successful application is made to lift the restrictions.
The judge remarked that Birch believed he had already incited the decoy to engage in sexual activity before his arrest.
Birch appeared via videolink from prison for the sentencing hearing and was ordered to pay a statutory surcharge as part of his sentence.
