EMAD KAKY'S SHOCKING FGM CONSPIRACY IN NOTTINGHAM AND SWANSEA LEADS TO SENTENCE INCREASE

In a landmark case that has sent ripples through the legal and social communities in England and Wales, Emad Kaky, a 48-year-old man with ties to Nottingham and Swansea, has seen his prison sentence significantly lengthened following his conviction for conspiracy to commit female genital mutilation (FGM).

Initially sentenced to four and a half years in October, Kaky's punishment was later challenged under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme, which allows for the review and potential increase of sentences deemed insufficient by the courts. The Attorney General's Office confirmed on Tuesday that, after this review, Kaky's sentence was extended to a total of seven years, effective from 24 January.

Details of the case reveal that Kaky, who completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2017, orchestrated a disturbing plan involving a young girl. According to court proceedings, he arranged for her to travel from Nottingham to Iraq, where she was at risk of undergoing FGM and being forced into marriage against her will. The Nottingham Crown Court heard that Kaky had personally booked and paid for the victim's trip while residing in Nottingham.

The case came to light when a witness, who was involved in the victim's return to the UK, reported Kaky to the police. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated that the witness's intervention was crucial in uncovering the conspiracy. Although Kaky was living in Nottingham at the time of the offence, he was residing in Swansea, Wales, when he was convicted.

FGM has been a criminal offence in England and Wales since 1985, reflecting the country's firm stance against this harmful practice. This case marks the third conviction related to FGM in England and Wales, but notably, it is the first time someone has been convicted specifically of conspiracy to commit FGM.

Legal authorities and government officials have expressed their strong stance on the matter. The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC, emphasized the heinous nature of FGM, stating, "FGM is a sickening crime and this government is determined to stamp out the practice as part of our mission to halve violence against women and girls. This offender intended to inflict grotesque physical and mental suffering upon a child. The court has rightly decided to increase his sentence to reflect the severity of his crime."

Janine McKinney, the chief crown prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, added, "During the trial, we presented evidence that the defendant considered his behaviour to be normal. Emad Kaky has faced the consequences of his actions in trying to get a child subjected to female genital mutilation and be forced into a marriage not of her choosing."

Overall, this case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and judicial authorities to combat FGM and protect vulnerable individuals from such barbaric practices, with the case of Emad Kaky serving as a stark reminder of the seriousness with which these crimes are now being prosecuted.
