ELLIE O'MALLEY FROM SALFORD SENTENCED FOR STARVING DOG TO DEATH AND BURYING REMAINS IN GARDEN

A tragic case of animal cruelty has unfolded in Salford, where a local couple was found guilty of neglecting and causing the death of their young dog, Rocko. The investigation was initiated after concerns were raised about the welfare of the brindle bull crossbreed, prompting authorities to intervene and uncover the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the dog’s demise.

Ellie O’Malley, aged 26, and her partner, 22-year-old Alex Jordan, became the focus of the investigation conducted by the RSPCA. The couple’s initial explanation for Rocko’s condition was that the dog had been injured during an incident on a nearby football field, where O’Malley claimed Rocko sustained a leg injury after an encounter with a horse. She described the dog as appearing relatively fine at first, but over time, Rocko’s health deteriorated. He stopped eating and refused to go to the toilet, ultimately succumbing to his injuries and neglect. O’Malley later admitted that Jordan, who is also the father of at least one of her children, had buried Rocko’s remains in their garden.

Following these revelations, authorities intervened, and Rocko’s body was exhumed for detailed examination. RSPCA Inspector Deborah Beats, who led the investigation, described the condition of the dog’s remains as “emaciated, with visible ribs, hips, and skull bones,” highlighting the severity of neglect that had taken place.

Subsequent post-mortem tests at the RSPCA’s Manchester and Salford Animal Hospital confirmed that Rocko had suffered from extreme malnutrition. The examination revealed that the dog weighed only 11.6 kilograms, a stark contrast to what would be expected for a healthy dog of his breed and size. His body showed signs of significant muscle wasting, and his ribs, spine, and pelvis were prominently visible. Additionally, foreign objects such as pieces of plastic, rubber, and chicken bones were found lodged in his mouth and stomach, indicating that he had been deprived of proper nutrition and had possibly choked. The veterinary assessment concluded that Rocko’s death was likely caused by a combination of starvation and choking due to the foreign objects lodged in his digestive system.

Both O’Malley and Jordan pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. Inspector Beats condemned their actions, stating, “This was a tragic case where a young dog suffered and died unnecessarily. Rocko’s body was in an appalling state when recovered from the garden—his suffering could have been entirely prevented with proper care and nutrition.”

In sentencing, Alex Jordan received a 12-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, along with 180 hours of unpaid work and a fine of £400. Ellie O’Malley was given a 12-month community order, required to complete 12 days of rehabilitation activities, and ordered to pay a £100 fine plus a £114 victim surcharge. Both individuals were also banned from keeping animals for a period of five years.

Animal welfare advocates have expressed disappointment with the leniency of the sentences, arguing that harsher penalties are necessary to deter such severe neglect cases in the future. The case has once again highlighted the importance of animal protection laws and the need for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable animals in communities like Salford.
