EDWARD GALLAGHER SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN SKIPTON
In a case that has shocked the community of Skipton, 67-year-old Edward Gallagher has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of eight years after admitting to multiple serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.Gallagher, a resident of Rowland Street in Skipton, appeared before Bradford Crown Court on October 15, where he pleaded guilty to a total of nine charges. These included three counts of attempted rape, five counts of indecent assault, and one charge of indecency with a child. The court proceedings revealed the gravity of his actions, which have left a lasting impact on the victim and the community.
The case was temporarily adjourned following Gallagher’s plea to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report, which would assist the judge in determining the appropriate punishment. During the hearing, Gallagher’s legal representative, Sophie Drake, spoke on his behalf, emphasizing that he felt profound remorse for his conduct. She also highlighted that Gallagher had previously been regarded as a man of good character, actively involved in his local community, where he had contributed to helping vulnerable and needy individuals.
Despite these character references, Judge Peter Benson did not hold back in condemning Gallagher’s actions. He described Gallagher as a “committed paedophile” and characterized the offenses as “dreadful,” reflecting the seriousness with which the court viewed the case. As part of his sentence, Gallagher was ordered to be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for the remainder of his life, a measure designed to prevent any future offending.
Furthermore, upon his eventual release from prison, Gallagher will be placed on extended licence, a form of supervised release that extends beyond the usual term. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at safeguarding the community from potential harm.
