He admitted attending at her St Boswells home uninvited, loitering outside the house, acting in an aggressive manner when asked to leave, repeatedly asking her if she was in a relationship, and repeatedly telephoning her.
The court heard how the couple had been in a relationship for three and a half years and separated in June.
After she had ended the relationship she began receiving multiple telephone calls which she suspected were coming from Deerin.
At one stage, the woman was receiving between 20 and 40 calls a day.
On July 5, she sent a text message to a number she knew belonged to Deerin saying she did not want him to contact her or her children, but the calls still continued to come from an unknown number.
On August 2, a neighbour, who knew the background to the case, visited the woman when Deerin approached her house about 2.15 am and whispered through the letter box to let her in, which she ignored.
An hour later, the neighbour returned to his home when he heard a noise coming from the rear of the woman's property.
He telephoned his son to visit him and check the woman's back garden, where Deerin was found there in a confrontational mood.
Sheriff Peter Paterson imposed a community payback order with 12 months of supervision and a conduct requirement.
Deerin was also given a non-harassment order banning him from having any contact with the woman for the next two years —————————————————————————————————— A man from Galashiels has admitted to a stalking charge after subjecting his former partner to numerous phone calls from an unknown number.
Forty-year-old Edward Deerin, residing at Gala Park Court, pleaded guilty in Selkirk Sheriff Court to engaging in conduct that caused fear and distress to the woman between June 1 and October 5 of the previous year.
He acknowledged attending her home in St Boswells without permission, loitering near her residence, behaving aggressively when asked to leave, repeatedly inquiring about her relationship status, and making numerous calls to her.
The court was informed that the couple had been together for approximately three and a half years before separating in June.
Following their breakup, the woman started receiving multiple phone calls, which she believed originated from Deerin.
At one point, she received between 20 and 40 calls per day.
On July 5, she sent a text message to a number she recognized as Deerin’s, explicitly stating she did not want him to contact her or her children, yet the calls persisted from an unknown number.
On August 2, a neighbor, who was aware of the situation, visited the woman after Deerin approached her house early in the morning around 2:15 am and whispered through her letterbox, which she ignored.
An hour later, the neighbor, returning home, heard noises from the back of her property and called his son to check the area.
Deerin was found in the backyard, behaving confrontationally.
Sheriff Robert Fife described Deerin’s extended behavior as "very worrying and alarming," covering several months.
The court adjourned sentencing until March 2 to allow for background reports and imposed a two-year ban on Deerin having any contact with the woman through a non-harassment order.
