EDWARD CURTIS AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCE IN PORT TALBOT

A teacher from Port Talbot has been found guilty of grooming and engaging in a sexual relationship with a young girl, a case that has shocked the local community and drawn significant media attention. Edward Curtis, aged 30, faced court on Monday, July 3, 2023, at Swansea Crown Court to answer charges related to the abuse of a minor.

The prosecution charged Curtis with seven counts of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust. Despite initially denying all charges, a jury convicted him on three counts involving a single victim on June 12, 2023. The court acquitted Curtis of four other counts relating to a different girl, both of whom are entitled to lifelong anonymity due to legal protections for victims of such crimes.

During the trial, it was revealed how Curtis, a teacher, had carefully cultivated a trusting relationship with the victim. Evidence indicated that he created a close, one-on-one connection which subsequently led to the offending acts. The victim delivered a poignant statement, describing how Curtis’s actions inflicted significant emotional distress, anxiety, and worry. She expressed her fear that if he could harm her, he might similarly target others, underscoring the lasting impact of the ordeal.

The defendant's legal counsel, Nicola Powell, challenged the argument that these acts were meticulously planned or amounted to grooming. In her mitigation, she highlighted the damage Curtis had suffered, noting that he had lost his job, his career, and his reputation as a direct result of the case, which he accepted. Powell also emphasized Curtis’s personal circumstances, stating he was the primary caregiver for his mother after his father’s tragic death in an accident. She described Curtis as a thoughtful individual and a stabilizing presence for his family, quoting his mother who called him her “rock.”

Edward Curtis, who resides on Darwin Road in Port Talbot, had no prior convictions before this case. Nonetheless, the court’s sentencing reflected the severity of his crimes. Judge Catherine Richards sentenced him to one year in prison. Additionally, Curtis will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and must adhere to a restraining order intended to protect the victim for a period of three years.
