ILKESTON MAN SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG
A man named Edward Casey has been jailed for 26 weeks after being caught on camera verbally and physically abusing his Staffordshire bull terrier named Patch in June 2022 at Marshall Way, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The RSPCA provided evidence through two videos. In the footage, on June 21, Casey was seen telling Patch to go to bed before forcefully kicking him twice. The following day, on June 22, Casey returned to the lounge, reprimanded the dog, then kicked him under the chin and punched him with such force that he injured his hand. Casey claimed his injury was due to falling food cans, but the RSPCA stated his hand was hurt from the force of the kicks. After being reported, Casey sought medical treatment for tissue damage, falsely claiming the injury was from cans falling on his hand. The RSPCA seized Patch on June 26, accompanied by police, following a property search. The dog was examined by a vet and found to have no lasting injuries. It was noted that Casey had a previous ban from keeping animals and admitted to breaching this order. Casey, aged 38 and residing on Ebenezer Street, Ilkeston, accepted two animal cruelty charges and a breach of his lifetime animal ban. He was sentenced at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on May 22.
