DUNCAN BYRNE FROM SCARBOROUGH SENTENCED TO OVER SIX YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES

In a case that has shocked the community of Scarborough, Duncan James Byrne, aged 34 and residing on North Marine Road, was sentenced to a prison term exceeding six years after admitting to engaging in sexual activities with a young child. The disturbing offences took place in Scarborough between March and April of the previous year, highlighting a grave breach of trust and safety within the local area.

Initially, Byrne faced three separate charges related to these heinous acts but entered a plea of not guilty. However, during the course of proceedings, he changed his stance and pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to a more severe sentencing. The case was heard at York Crown Court, where the court was informed that Byrne’s criminal conduct was uncovered after the young victim managed to confide in her mother about the abuse.

Prosecutor Sarah Mallett detailed that Byrne had explicitly warned the child not to disclose what was happening, an attempt to silence her and conceal the abuse. The court was told that Byrne’s actions were particularly egregious, described by Judge Stephen Ashurst, the recorder of York, as “obnoxious” offences. The judge ordered Byrne to be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life and imposed an indefinite ban on him working with children, emphasizing the ongoing risk he posed.

In addition to the six years and six months imprisonment, Judge Ashurst remarked that the three charges only represented a fraction of the sexual assaults Byrne had committed against his young victim. The court also heard that Byrne was classified as a “high risk” to children, underscoring the danger he posed to the community.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Laura Carroll from North Yorkshire Police’s protecting vulnerable persons unit issued a statement condemning Byrne’s actions as “abhorrent and beneath contempt.” She praised the bravery of the victim and her family for coming forward despite the trauma they endured. Carroll emphasized that Byrne’s admission of guilt and the consequences he now faces will stay with him for the rest of his life. She expressed hope that the outcome would encourage other victims of sexual abuse to have the confidence to report their experiences to law enforcement.

The court was also informed that after Byrne’s arrest, he initially denied the offences and attempted to shift blame onto others during police interviews. A trial was scheduled for October, but Byrne’s guilty pleas precluded the need for a full trial. His legal representative, Tom Storey, stated that Byrne had recognized the need for help and expressed his willingness to cooperate with probation services and other authorities to address his issues.
