DORIS NARTEY'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN NEWPORT REVEALED

In a disturbing case of animal neglect that shocked the community of Newport, Doris Nartey, a resident of Capel Crescent, was found guilty of multiple offences related to the cruel treatment of two dogs. Born on January 13, 1966, Nartey faced justice after a series of allegations concerning her neglect of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Rosie and a French Bulldog called Boss.

In January 2019, the RSPCA conducted a thorough investigation at her residence, uncovering the appalling conditions in which the animals were kept. Inspectors discovered Rosie, who was severely undernourished and emaciated, tied to the stairs of Nartey’s property. The dog was described by an RSPCA inspector as a “bag of bones,” highlighting the extreme state of starvation she was in. Alongside Rosie, the French Bulldog Boss was found confined within a dog crate, with no access to food, water, or bedding, and was also in a poor physical condition.

During an interview with the RSPCA, Nartey claimed that Rosie had not been taken to the veterinarian because of the bad weather, and justified tying her to the stairs by saying that the dog would jump up at her. It was confirmed that both dogs were under her care at the time of the neglect. The inspector, Emma Smith, expressed her shock at the scene, stating, “It is clear that both of these dogs had been neglected and their needs were not being met. I was just completely shocked when I saw Rosie in such an emaciated condition and tied to the stairs. She was just skin and bones – it was heartbreaking to see.”

When Rosie was rescued from the property, she eagerly drank rainwater from a pool outside, clearly suffering from dehydration. The dogs were immediately taken to a veterinary clinic for assessment. The vet confirmed that Rosie was dehydrated, had sores on her feet, and was suffering from severe weight loss, indicating she had been in this state for approximately four weeks. Boss’s condition was similarly neglected, with his needs unmet and his health compromised.

Following their rescue, both dogs received specialized veterinary diets aimed at restoring their health and weight. They were eventually rehomed together from the RSPCA Newport Animal Centre, finding a loving forever home after their ordeal.

Nartey, who was living with her adult children Cintia Nartey and Rio Nartey at the time, expressed remorse for her actions during the legal proceedings. Her sentencing included a fine, costs, and charges totaling £610. Additionally, she was banned from owning any animals for five years, a ban that expired in May 2024.

This case has brought to light the importance of animal welfare and the need for vigilance in ensuring that pets are properly cared for, especially in communities like Newport where such neglect can occur behind closed doors.
