DONNA MIDWINTER'S CRUELTY IN NEWBURY: BORDER COLLIE SUFFERED WITH PRESSURE SORES AND URINE SCALDS

Donna Marie Midwinter, born in 1976 and residing at 55 Cresswell Road in Newbury, became the subject of a serious animal cruelty case that drew the attention of local authorities and animal welfare organizations. The case centered around allegations of neglect and mistreatment of her pet, a black-and-white border collie, during a period spanning from December 2019 to January 2020.

According to court records, the condition of the dog was found to be extremely distressing. The animal was discovered with visible pressure sores and urine scalds, injuries that are typically indicative of prolonged neglect and poor living conditions. The severity of the dog's suffering prompted intervention from the RSPCA, which took the matter to court to seek justice for the animal.

In November 2020, the RSPCA brought charges against Midwinter, who appeared in court to face allegations of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet. During the proceedings, she maintained a plea of not guilty, denying any intentional harm or neglect. Despite her denial, the evidence presented was compelling enough for the court to find her guilty of the offence in May 2021.

Following her conviction, Midwinter was summoned to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 23. The sentencing judge imposed a series of penalties aimed at rehabilitation and punishment. She was ordered to participate in up to 15 days of rehabilitation activity, which likely included educational programs on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Additionally, she was mandated to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service and was required to pay costs amounting to £500. Notably, the court did not impose a ban on her owning animals in the future, a decision that drew some criticism from animal welfare advocates.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about animal cruelty and the importance of vigilant enforcement of animal protection laws in Newbury and beyond. The suffering endured by the border collie underscores the need for continued public awareness and stricter penalties to prevent such cases from recurring.
