DONALD PEARSON OF BILSTON AND TIPTON SENTENCED TO ADDITIONAL FIVE YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In a significant development in the ongoing fight against child sexual abuse, Donald Pearson, a man with a troubling history of predatory behavior, has been sentenced to an additional five years and four months in prison. This sentencing follows a series of investigations that uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning over a decade, primarily in the areas of Bilston and Tipton.

Pearson, who was previously known as Bates, was first convicted of sexual offenses in the early 1980s. His criminal activities came to light after a victim, now aged 56, recognized details of Pearson’s initial conviction in a February 2011 edition of the Express & Star. This recognition prompted renewed investigations into Pearson’s past, revealing that he had committed multiple offenses during the 1980s while residing in Tipton.

According to police reports, Pearson’s abuse was carried out over a period from 1980 to 1990, with seven victims identified so far. These victims were all children, and Pearson exploited his trusted position within the community to befriend and manipulate young boys. His residence in Tipton served as the backdrop for many of these heinous acts. It was also revealed that Pearson had previously lived on St Martin’s Terrace in Bilston, a detail that underscores his long-standing presence in the West Midlands area.

Most recently, Pearson, now of Bilston, pleaded guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court to a total of 24 separate offenses related to child sexual abuse. The court heard that he had engaged in a series of predatory acts, taking advantage of his social standing to gain the trust of young boys before assaulting them. The judge sentenced him to five years and four months in prison, with the stipulation that he will serve at least half of this sentence before being eligible for release.

Investigating officer Acting Det Sgt Dan Bailey from the Sandwell Public Protection Unit described Pearson as a “dangerous predatory paedophile” who used his position within the community to exploit vulnerable children. Bailey emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating, “We’ve identified many people who were abused by Pearson but there could be others out there, and my hope is that they see his picture in the press and either have the courage to come forward and speak to us or simply take solace in the fact that he’s been punished for his crimes.”

Further context reveals that Pearson’s criminal history includes a suspended sentence handed down in October 2010 at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Despite this, he was found guilty of molesting a nine-year-old boy and was initially given a suspended sentence. However, the Solicitor General Edward Garnier appealed this decision, leading to a retrial in London’s Court of Appeal in February 2011. The appeal resulted in Pearson being sentenced to four years in prison, with a requirement to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and to be registered as a sex offender for life.

The court detailed that Pearson had befriended a nine-year-old boy in a park in 1984, falsely claiming that the boy did not need to attend school before assaulting him at a private residence. The victim did not report the abuse until 2009, highlighting the long-lasting impact of Pearson’s actions. A report on Pearson described him as a “high risk to young boys,” underscoring the ongoing danger he poses to the community.

As the legal proceedings conclude, authorities continue to urge any additional victims or witnesses to come forward. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for ongoing support for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
