DILLON MCCOMBE FROM LARNE SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG DEXTER

In a case that has shocked the local community of Larne, Dillon McCombe, born around the year 2000 and residing on Glynn Road, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his pet dog, a lurcher named Dexter. The incident drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities and highlights ongoing concerns about animal cruelty within the region.

McCombe’s neglect came to light after an investigation conducted by the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Animal Welfare Officers. It was revealed that McCombe had been advised that Dexter, his dog, required urgent medical attention due to a suspected broken leg. Despite this knowledge, McCombe failed to seek appropriate veterinary care for his pet, leaving Dexter to endure severe pain and discomfort without treatment.

On September 18, 2023, authorities executed a search warrant at McCombe’s residence on Glynn Road. During the search, Dexter was seized by Animal Welfare Officers. The dog was found unable to bear weight on his injured left hind leg and was visibly suffering, clearly indicating the severity of his condition. The officers promptly transported Dexter to a veterinary clinic appointed by the council for a thorough assessment.

Veterinary examinations confirmed that Dexter had sustained a fracture to his left hind leg. The scans revealed the extent of the injury, and it was evident that the dog had been in considerable pain for some time. Fortunately, with proper treatment and care, Dexter was able to recover from his injuries. Following his recovery, the dog was rehomed through an animal charity, finding a new family that could provide the love and attention he deserved.

In court, Dillon McCombe pleaded guilty to the charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, specifically Dexter. The case was prosecuted under the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, emphasizing the importance of animal welfare laws in protecting vulnerable creatures from neglect and cruelty.

As part of his sentencing, McCombe was ordered to complete 240 hours of community service. Additionally, he received a five-year disqualification order that prohibits him from owning or keeping any dogs during this period. This disqualification is set to expire in August 2029, serving as a reminder of the legal consequences of animal cruelty and the community’s stance against such behavior.
