DILBIRIN CHEIKHE SENTENCED IN SHEFFIELD FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL AND LIKELY DEPORTATION
A young man named Dilbirin Cheikhe, an illegal immigrant residing in Sheffield, has been convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a teenage girl.The incident took place in Sheffield, where Cheikhe, aged 22, subjected the girl to two separate episodes of sexual assault and rape over the course of a single night.
The court heard that Cheikhe, who was living on Musgrave Road in the Shirecliffe area of Sheffield, met the girl for the first time shortly before the assaults occurred.
Despite her pleas for him to stop, he continued his attack, showing a blatant disregard for her distress.
During the hearing held on June 21, 2024, Sheffield Crown Court was informed by prosecutor Louise Reevell that the victim was under 18 at the time of the offenses.
The girl, whose identity is protected by law, was visibly distressed during her testimony, sobbing loudly as she recounted the events.
Cheikhe’s response to her distress was to cover her mouth with his hand in an attempt to silence her, an act that further compounded her trauma.
The girl provided a heartfelt statement read aloud in court, describing how the ordeal had robbed her of her teenage years.
She expressed that her life had been significantly affected, leading her to abandon her education and confine herself mostly to her home.
Her bedroom became her only sanctuary, as she felt unable to leave the house due to the emotional scars inflicted by Cheikhe’s actions.
She also detailed her ongoing mental health struggles, including anxiety, derealisation, and depersonalisation.
The NHS describes derealisation and depersonalisation as feelings of being outside oneself, observing one’s actions, thoughts, or feelings from a distance.
The girl described these sensations as the 'worst feeling in the world,' emphasizing how they hinder her ability to live a normal life.
Following a unanimous guilty verdict, Cheikhe was convicted in March 2024 of two counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
The court heard that Cheikhe, who arrived in the UK as an illegal immigrant in February 2020 and was in the process of learning English at the time of the offenses, understood enough English to comprehend basic commands such as 'no' and 'yes.' During the sentencing, defense lawyer Kevin Jones argued that Cheikhe was an inexperienced young man, both in life and relationships, and suggested that he had shown some remorse despite denying the charges and being convicted after trial.
Mr.
Jones contested the pre-sentence report’s assessment that Cheikhe posed a high risk of reoffending, asserting that his lack of previous convictions should be taken into account and that the conviction alone was the basis for such a conclusion.
Judge Taryn Turner, presiding over the case, sentenced Cheikhe to eight and a half years in prison.
She emphasized that there was evidence of planning in the sexual abuse inflicted upon the girl and stated that what happened that night would leave a lasting impact on her.
The judge also ordered that Cheikhe serve at least two-thirds of his sentence behind bars before being considered for release, and she indicated that he is likely to face deportation once he completes his sentence.
Furthermore, Recorder Turner mandated that Cheikhe register as a sex offender for life and imposed a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting the victim.
This order will remain in effect until further notice from the court, ensuring her protection from any potential contact or harassment in the future.
