DESMOND BROWN OF WARRINGTON CAUGHT IN DISTURBING ONLINE PREDATION SCHEME NEAR LIVERPOOL
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and predatory behavior, Desmond Brown, a 68-year-old resident of Warrington, was found to have engaged in inappropriate and illegal conversations with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. The incident unfolded in August 2019, when Brown initiated contact with what he thought was a young girl on the internet, specifically on the website Chat Avenue.
Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was communicating with was actually operated by an undercover police officer.
Brown, who used the username "LongHorn95" and posted a photo of himself claiming to be 55 years old, claimed to have previously worked as a joiner at a school and to have had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female pupil.
During the online exchanges, he expressed boredom following his retirement and discussed his past experiences in a manner that suggested a desire for further sexual encounters.
The officer, posing as a girl named Bella from Exeter, told Brown she was 13 and bored, prompting him to reveal details about his past relationships and to suggest the possibility of meeting up.
He discussed taking her for a drive and even mentioned performing a sex act on her, stating that if they had sex, he would wear a condom.
Brown also asked Bella to send a photo to verify her age, but she declined, and he then suggested they stop chatting, citing fears of entrapment.
Despite this, the conversation continued, with Brown expressing intentions to meet and engage in sexual activity, and asking her to delete their chat history.
When she refused to join a video call, he ignored subsequent messages.
Brown’s actions came under scrutiny when he was arrested at his home on October 24, 2019.
Authorities found no indecent images on his electronic devices, but his online communications were enough to warrant further investigation.
During police interviews, Brown claimed he was bored and believed he was speaking to an adult for sexual gratification, denying any sexual interest in children and asserting that he fabricated the story about the 15-year-old girl.
He admitted to engaging in sexual communication with a minor between August 8 and September 10, 2019, despite the fact that no actual child was involved.
His behavior led to a court hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, where he faced multiple charges.
The court heard that Brown had a prior criminal record, including two counts of indecent assault and indecent exposure in 1981, for which he was previously sentenced to serve time in prison but was released.
In sentencing, the judge handed Brown a 10-month jail term, suspended for two years, along with a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
Additionally, Brown is required to adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
