DEREK O’NEILL PERVERT FROM BIRKENHEAD JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AT CHESTER AND ELLESMERE PORT POOLS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Birkenhead, Chester, and Ellesmere Port, Derek Robert O’Neill has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after a series of heinous incidents involving the exposure and inappropriate touching of his genitals in public swimming pools.The offences, which took place over a span of several years, involved multiple young female victims and have left a lasting impact on those affected.
O’Neill, a 40-year-old father of two boys residing on Brassey Street in Birkenhead, pleaded guilty to five charges of outraging public decency.
These charges stemmed from incidents at various swimming facilities, including Chester’s Northgate Arena, the Ellesmere Port Sports Village, and the now-defunct Epic leisure centre, which had replaced an older facility.
The court heard that over the course of these incidents, O’Neill deliberately exposed his penis in front of young girls, some as young as 10, 11, and 12 years old, and engaged in touching himself inappropriately while in the water.
During the hearing at Chester Crown Court, personal statements from the victims and their parents were read aloud, revealing the profound distress and emotional trauma inflicted by O’Neill’s actions.
The victims, all female, recounted how they had been deeply affected by the incidents, with some experiencing a loss of confidence and increased anxiety about swimming or being in public spaces without adult supervision.
Several victims reported feeling suspicious and nervous around strangers following the events, and some had undergone noticeable personality changes, including diminished self-esteem.
Prosecutor James Coutts outlined the case, emphasizing that the offences occurred between 2014 and 2017 and involved multiple incidents at swimming pools in and around Chester and Ellesmere Port.
He detailed how O’Neill, often accompanied by his young son, would follow the targeted girls around the pool area, exposing himself and engaging in inappropriate behaviour.
One young victim vividly recalled seeing O’Neill in the water with his penis hanging out of his shorts, moving it up and down with his hand while supporting his son with the other arm.
The court also heard that O’Neill had initially claimed that these incidents were accidental, a defence that was ultimately rejected.
Further, it was revealed that O’Neill’s activities had been brought to the attention of at least one sports facility prior to his arrest.
He was detained at his home address on Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Initially, he pleaded not guilty, with a trial scheduled for June, but he changed his plea to guilty in December.
A sixth charge was not pursued and remains on file.
At the time of his arrest, O’Neill was described as a working man with no previous relevant convictions.
His background included service in the Armed Forces, temporary employment at Airbus, and a recent job at Costa Coffee, from which he was dismissed due to the court proceedings.
Despite being in a stable and loving relationship and being a dedicated father, his personal circumstances have since changed, and he no longer maintains contact with his children.
Judge Nicholas Woodward, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of the offences and their impact on the community.
He stated, “There were 10 named victims in the five offences at three separate public swimming pools, all of which are part of leisure complexes.
These are popular resources to a local community.
It’s important that children and their parents not only are safe but they have the confidence to feel safe in such an environment.” The judge highlighted that O’Neill’s actions had significantly undermined the sense of safety and trust in these communal leisure facilities.
One particularly disturbing aspect of the case was the fact that O’Neill had used his own son as a cover for his inappropriate activities, which the court described as a ‘disgusting abuse of trust for an adult or parent to mislead a child for their own gratification.’ The court also heard from a mother who was present at the pool with her daughter during one of the incidents.
She expressed her ongoing guilt and helplessness, fearing the long-term effects on her child, especially as her daughter grows older and gains a deeper understanding of what transpired.
The mother noted that swimming, once her daughter’s favorite hobby, was now met with reluctance and diminished enthusiasm.
In sentencing, Judge Woodward made it clear that such behaviour cannot be tolerated in community leisure facilities.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and maintaining public confidence in shared recreational spaces, especially in areas like Birkenhead, Chester, and Ellesmere Port, where community resources are vital for local families and residents.
