DEREK MITCHELL OF CARDIFF SENTENCED TO 14 LIFE TERMS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN SOUTH GLAMORGAN
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Cardiff, Derek Mitchell, a 55-year-old man residing in the city, was handed down an unprecedented sentence of 14 life imprisonments yesterday.The sentences were the culmination of a lengthy trial that uncovered a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse spanning over two decades, involving multiple young victims.
According to court proceedings, Mitchell was found guilty of abusing four boys aged between 3 and 10 years old.
The abuse reportedly took place over a period of up to five years, during which the children were subjected to repeated acts of indecency and assault.
The court was also informed that Mitchell committed a series of rapes against a girl starting from when she was just 10 years old.
Additionally, he was convicted of raping one of her friends, who was 13 at the time.
The prosecution, led by Peter Jacobs, detailed how Mitchell systematically exploited the innocence of these young victims.
The assaults on the boys were carried out in Mitchell’s own bedroom, often in the presence of the other children, creating an environment of fear and silence.
Mitchell used threats to silence his victims, warning one boy that he would give him a “good hiding” if he ever disclosed what was happening.
Despite these threats, the boys kept their silence until June of the previous year, when concerns were raised by a friend of the children.
The social services were alerted after the friend expressed concern over what was described as “rude games” being played by the boys, which was later revealed to be a cover for the abuse.
The court heard how the victims endured their ordeal in silence for years, fearing retaliation or not understanding the gravity of the situation.
In a separate trial held in November, Mitchell was also convicted of multiple rapes against the girl starting from age 10, as well as molesting her brother.
The judge, Martin Stephens, described the crimes as a horrific breach of trust and emphasized that only a substantial prison sentence could serve justice.
The 14 life sentences handed down are to run concurrently, reflecting the severity and multiplicity of the offenses.
