DEREK JENNINGS FROM NORTH END SLUGS POLICE HORSE BEFORE FOOTBALL MATCH IN PORTSMOUTH

Derek Jennings, a known football hooligan from North End, Portsmouth, was involved in a disturbing incident that took place on the day of a local derby football match on September 24, 2019. The incident drew significant attention from law enforcement and the public alike, highlighting issues of violence and disorder at sporting events.

According to court records, Jennings, born around 1967 and residing on Laburnum Grove, Portsmouth PO2 0EU, was observed by police officers to be displaying aggressive behavior amidst the chaos and excitement leading up to the match. His conduct escalated when a police officer riding the mounted police horse, Luna, approached him in an effort to manage the situation and maintain order. It was at this moment that Jennings committed a shocking act of violence against the animal.

He clenched his fist and struck Luna directly on the nose, causing the horse to shy away from the attack. Not content with this assault, Jennings swung at Luna two more times, attempting to strike the animal again. The police officer riding Luna responded swiftly, and Jennings attempted to flee the scene. However, he was quickly apprehended by officers and taken into custody. Fortunately, Luna was unharmed during the attack and was able to continue her duties without injury.

The court heard that Jennings’s actions were not only reckless but also deeply deplorable, especially considering the fact that Luna was there to help ensure the safety of spectators and participants at the event. DCI John McGonigle of Hampshire Constabulary condemned the behavior, stating, “For a grown man to act in this way was deplorable, especially against an animal, who was simply there to help protect people who wanted to enjoy the game and get home safely. We hope this sentence sends a clear message that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour or any disorder at any public event. Action will be taken and those responsible will be investigated.”

In response to the incident, the authorities expressed gratitude for the public’s support and concern for Luna, which was greatly appreciated. The court ultimately sentenced Jennings to 20 months in prison and imposed a six-year football banning order, prohibiting him from attending matches during that period. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat violence and disorder at sporting events, emphasizing that such behavior will be met with strict consequences.
