DEREK HARDMAN SENTENCED IN BURNLEY FOR SEX OFFENSES INVOLVING VULNERABLE TEENAGER

Derek Hardman, a 64-year-old man with a criminal record related to sexual offenses, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for engaging in sexual activities with a minor. The incident that led to his arrest and subsequent conviction took place in Burnley, a town in East Lancashire, where Hardman’s actions have caused significant distress and concern.

On September 28, 2022, law enforcement authorities in East Lancashire received information indicating that Hardman had been involved in sexual conduct with a girl who was only 16 years old and considered vulnerable due to her age and circumstances. This revelation prompted a swift response from the police, leading to Hardman’s arrest. During police interviews, Hardman maintained his innocence, denying any involvement or wrongdoing. Despite his denials, investigators conducted a thorough and detailed investigation, which uncovered a substantial body of evidence that contradicted his claims.

Among the evidence collected were numerous text messages sent by Hardman to the young girl, messages that raised serious concerns about the nature of their interactions and his intentions. Hardman, who is currently without a fixed address, was brought before Burnley Crown Court in November, where he faced multiple charges. Today, on March 3rd, Hardman appeared once again at Burnley Crown Court for sentencing. The court handed down a sentence of 11 years and nine months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his crimes. Additionally, the court imposed a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his activities and contact with minors, and mandated that he register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, delivered a heartfelt statement to the court. She expressed the profound impact the crimes have had on her mental health, stating, “I am not working at the moment and I think that some of it is due to the effect that the crimes have had on me. It has really affected my mental health. I don’t like going out on my own and I don’t go out at night. I’m too scared.”

She further revealed the emotional toll she has endured, sharing, “I have had nightmares about what Derek did to me. The doctor prescribed me sleeping tablets for this. I still have sleepless nights and nightmares about what happened. I was diagnosed with PTSD in February 2023 as a result of the crimes committed against me. This is something that I need to work through.”

Hardman’s case highlights the ongoing concerns about safeguarding vulnerable young people and the importance of rigorous law enforcement efforts to bring offenders to justice. His sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who exploit minors and breach societal trust in such a grievous manner.
