DEREK COX CAUGHT IN THORNBURY: SHOCKING ATTEMPT TO ENGAGE WITH UNDERAGE GIRLS IN BRISTOL AND SHEFFIELD
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Derek Cox, a 59-year-old man from Thornbury, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation after attempting to engage in sexual conversations with what he believed were underage girls online. The incident unfolded in June 2019, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that was ultimately thwarted by vigilant paedophile hunters.According to court records, Cox had been communicating with three individuals he believed to be young girls, aged 12 and 13. These conversations, which initially appeared to be innocent exchanges, quickly took a darker turn as Cox used a false identity to facilitate sexualized dialogue. One of the girls, who claimed to be named Lacey Lou from Manchester and aged 12, was part of the online interactions. The other two, Sasha and Shelley, both asserted they were 13 and from Sheffield. Cox, aware of his age disparity, continued to pursue these conversations with a clear intent to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard that Cox not only exchanged messages but also extended invitations to meet in person. He proposed traveling to Bristol and even offered to meet the girls in Sheffield, suggesting he would book a hotel for the occasion. When he discovered that Sasha and Shelley knew each other, Cox expressed a desire to engage in sexual activity with both girls simultaneously, indicating a disturbing level of intent. Fortunately, no meetings ever materialized, as Cox was confronted by paedophile hunters in Thornbury, where he was residing at the time.
During the legal proceedings at Bristol Crown Court, Cox admitted to the charges of attempting to communicate in a sexual manner with a child. Judge Euan Ambrose sentenced him to six months in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. The judge also issued a seven-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits Cox from having unsupervised contact with children under 16 and restricts his internet usage. Additionally, Cox was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online predatory behavior and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation. Cox’s arrest and subsequent conviction serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the dangers lurking in digital spaces, especially for young and impressionable individuals.
