DENTON NEWELL FROM STOKE NEWINGTON SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR CHILD RAPE IN HISTORIC CASE
In a significant and somber development, Denton George Newell, a resident of Lordship Road in Stoke Newington, has been handed a prison sentence of 13 years after being convicted of heinous crimes committed against a young girl over three decades ago. The case, which has garnered considerable attention due to its historical nature and the challenges faced in gathering evidence, was heard at the Inner London Crown Court.Newell, aged 61 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of indecent assault. The crimes date back to the 1980s, when the victim was only eight and nine years old. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of the abuse, which had remained largely unreported and unprosecuted for many years due to a lack of forensic evidence and missing police and social services documentation.
The prosecution primarily relied on the testimony of the victim, who chose to remain anonymous. She recounted that the abuse began when she was around eight or nine years old. According to her account, Newell, who operated an off-licence in Newington Green and a nightclub in Islington, had pulled her onto his lap under the pretense of wanting to discuss her school and romantic interests. During this encounter, he inappropriately touched her, an act that left a lasting impact on her.
The victim further described a subsequent incident where Newell took her to the top floor of a two-storey house. There, he slapped her across the face, tore off her tights and underwear, and raped her. These traumatic events were corroborated by her account and the limited evidence available, which was difficult to substantiate due to the absence of forensic material.
Additional details emerged during the trial, including an incident on May 17, 1984, when Newell allegedly dragged the victim into a bathroom and attempted to pull down her pants. The girl screamed for help, prompting her older brother to rush into the bathroom to see what was happening. Following this, the victim confided in her mother, leading to her being taken to see the family doctor. However, the doctor, Dr. Kay, was unable to perform a forensic examination due to a lack of medical expertise and advised her mother to report the incident to the police. Unfortunately, the case was never formally reported at that time.
The full extent of Newell’s abuse only came to light two years prior to his conviction, after the victim was assaulted by another individual. It was during this subsequent incident that police encouraged her to come forward and assist in their investigation. Her cooperation ultimately led to the charges being brought against Newell.
In sentencing, Newell received 13 years for the primary count of rape. He was also given a concurrent sentence of 24 months for a second count of rape, along with an additional 24 months for indecent assault. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his crimes and the importance of justice for victims of childhood abuse, especially in cases where evidence is scarce and the passage of time complicates prosecution.
