DEAN YATES SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR PAEDOPHILIC OFFENCES IN READING

A convicted paedophile, Dean Yates, has received a substantial prison sentence of 20 years following his heinous crimes in Reading.

The sentence was handed down at Reading Crown Court on Monday, July 31, with a specific focus on nine separate charges related to the exploitation and sexual abuse of underage girls.

The court heard that Yates, 34 years old and residing on Oxford Road in Reading, committed these offences in 2019, when he was approximately 30 years old.

The serious nature of his crimes included making an indecent photograph of a child, multiple counts of sexual activity with a minor aged 15, assaults on a female, and inciting or causing a 15-year-old girl into sexual acts.

Judge Emma Nott presided over the case and emphasized the severity of Yates's actions by imposing an extended sentence of 20 years, with a custodial period of 15 years, reflecting the grave breach of trust and the impact on the victims.

The court documents reveal that Yates used a series of manipulative tactics, including hacking into social media accounts of young girls, to obtain private photographs which he then exploited to blackmail them into further sexual activity.

During the trial, it was established that Yates masqueraded online using both his real name and an alias, often pretending to be younger than he actually was.

This deception was aimed at luring vulnerable young girls into trusting him.

The first set of allegations involved a 13-year-old girl.

Yates had hacked into the account of a 15-year-old boy and impersonated him in messaging exchanges with the young girl.

Under this false pretense, he persuaded her to send private photographs.

Subsequently, Yates blackmailed her by threatening to distribute these images to her parents and social media contacts unless she sent him more pictures.

The girl explained to police, “I sent him a picture because I thought it would make him go away.

Then he messaged saying if I didn’t send him more he was going to send the picture to my mum and dad and put it on social media.

So I sent him a few more photos.

He said he would send them to my friends and I didn’t know what to do.

I didn’t want to send him more as I thought it would get worse.” It was later discovered that the account Yates had hacked belonged to a different 15-year-old boy, who was arrested and interviewed by police before authorities confirmed that his account had been compromised.

This revelation led to Yates’s own arrest, prompting further investigations.

Following Yates’s apprehension, police interviewed another young girl who described her distressing interactions with him.

She disclosed that he had hacked her social media account and obtained private photographs, blackmailing her under the guise of an alias.

Her account of events detailed how Yates manipulated her into meeting him in person and engaging in sexual activity.

Remarkably, he pretended that he too was being blackmailed by the ‘alias’ account, adding to the psychological manipulation involved.

In a victim impact statement read aloud during the court proceedings, the 15-year-old girl expressed feelings of fear and distress, noting her young age at the time and her inability to fully cope with the emotional trauma inflicted by Yates’s actions.

The court also made provisions for the offender’s future safety and protection by imposing a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), aiming to prevent any further offences of this nature.

This case underscores the severity of online grooming and exploitation, especially when it involves breaches of trust and misuse of digital platforms to lure vulnerable minors into harmful situations.

Yates’s sentencing marks a stern warning and a step toward justice for the young victims affected by his calculated and malicious conduct in Reading.
