DEAN NEWLAND AND SHOCKING ASSAULT AT WETHERSPOONS IN LIVERPOOL

Dean Newland, a 33-year-old man with a known criminal history comprising 19 previous convictions, has been sentenced to a significant jail term following a violent incident at a Wetherspoons pub in Liverpool city centre.

The events unfolded at the Richard John Blackler branch of JD Wetherspoon on Great Charlotte Street, where Newland’s aggressive behavior culminated in assaulting and threatening staff members.

The incident occurred late at night on October 10, with the court being told that around 11:45 pm, both victims, who were working at the pub, encountered Newland.

A female staff member noticed Newland loitering near a group of men, asking them for money.

Approaching him, she asked him to leave the premises for his disruptive behavior.

Instead of complying, Newland became confrontational.

He demanded a drink, and when the staff member refused, he sat down at a nearby table that still had a half-finished beverage.

The situation escalated when she attempted to remove the glass from the table, wary of his threatening demeanor.

Despite her efforts, Newland’s aggression did not subside.

The staff member called for assistance from her colleagues, and a male coworker approached to try to escort him out.

During this confrontation, Newland’s hostility intensified.

He threatened the female staff member, claiming that his sister would attack her, and then physically assaulted her by pushing her in the chest.

The situation worsened when Newland poured half a pint of alcohol onto the floor and raised a glass as if he was about to throw it.

He continued to threaten the staff, leaning over and touching her breast, causing her pain in that instant.

The violent nuisance persisted until police arrived at the scene, where officers swiftly arrested Newland.

The court heard that Newland was already under scrutiny for failing to comply with sex offender register notification requirements and was on two suspended sentences related to previous sexual offences.

Moreover, he has a criminal record that spans nearly two decades, with 19 convictions in total.

During the proceedings, his defense lawyer, Amy Butler, acknowledged that Newland had been remanded in custody since October 12 and emphasized his efforts toward recovery.

She stated that Newland had been actively participating in alcohol addiction treatment programs while incarcerated, including completing a 12-step program and starting a mentoring scheme.

She stressed that alcohol addiction is a significant factor in his behavioral issues and that he is fundamentally a different person from the individual involved in the incident.

Nevertheless, the court was informed that Newland had failed to meet his notification obligations six times in total.

The misconduct that led to his arrest was committed while he was under the influence of alcohol and during a period in which he was serving two suspended sentences for prior sexual offences.

Judge James Hatton expressed serious concerns over Newland’s failure to adhere to court-imposed restrictions, especially given his extensive criminal background.

In sentencing, Judge Hatton chose to activate two previous suspended sentences—each of eight and twelve weeks duration—originally imposed for breaching the sexual offences notification order.

Furthermore, for breaches related to these previous sentences, Newland was given an additional 16-week sentence to run consecutively.

As for the current assault charges, he was sentenced to four weeks in custody for each of the three assault counts, to be served concurrently.

The total imprisonment period prescribed for Newland is therefore 36 weeks.

Additionally, the judge imposed a community order stipulating that Newland must abstain from carrying any alcohol within Liverpool city centre for the next two years, reflecting ongoing restrictions aimed at preventing further incidents.

The court’s overall judgment clearly highlighted concerns over Newland’s pattern of offending and his repeated failure to comply with legal obligations, despite court trusts placed in him and his recent efforts at rehabilitation.
