DEAN GRAHAM AND HIS SHOCKING RAPE ATTACK IN NEWCASTLE
UPDATE: Dean Graham, 42, has died while serving his sentence at HMP Northumberland in 2023.A courageous victim of sexual assault demonstrated remarkable bravery by fighting back and striking her attacker in the face, ultimately bringing an end to a terrifying ordeal.
The woman, whose identity remains protected to maintain her privacy, was found in a vulnerable situation after a night out when she fell asleep on a sofa inside a flat.
She was abruptly awakened to the horrifying realization that Dean Graham was assaulting her.
Her quick-thinking and decisive action, a punch to Graham’s face, halted the attack immediately.
Following the strike, Graham, aged 42 and residing on Kirkley Drive in Ponteland, attempted to dismiss the incident as if nothing had occurred.
He casually inquired why she had hit him, showing a lack of remorse or acknowledgment of the gravity of his actions.
Despite denying allegations of rape and sexual assault, Graham was convicted by a jury after a trial held at Newcastle Crown Court.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor David Comb detailed the distressing circumstances surrounding the incident.
He stated, “Mr Graham took advantage of the situation in which he found himself, for his own sexual gratification.” The events unfolded when the victim, who had been celebrating her birthday in December 2018, was at a friend’s house in Newcastle for an overnight stay.
She fell asleep on the sofa, unaware that she would be subjected to such a gross violation.
The court heard that Graham approached her while she was in this vulnerable state.
It was only when she became aware of what was happening that she was able to defend herself—punching Graham in the face, which successfully caused him to cease his assault.
The victim was left shaken and distressed by the incident, prompting her immediate attempt to locate her mobile phone in an effort to seek help.
As she searched for her phone, Graham followed her closely, feigning innocence and asking her why she had punched him.
His attitude and actions contradicted any claims of harmlessness, revealing a disturbing disregard for her well-being and the gravity of his actions.
Judge Tony Hawks sentenced Dean Graham to a total of six years and ten months in prison.
Furthermore, Graham was instructed to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes.
The court was informed that Graham had prior convictions for violence and disorderly conduct; however, he had no previous history of sexual offences.
This case highlights the importance of victim bravery and the justice system’s role in addressing sexual crimes.
It also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by individuals in their own homes and the critical need for support and protection for victims.
