DEAN GATHERCOLE SENTENCED IN NOTTINGHAM FOR SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSES AT CHILDREN'S HOME AND HOLIDAY PARK
A man named Dean Gathercole has been handed a four-year prison sentence in connection with a series of disturbing sexual assault crimes that took place during his tenure at a children’s home in Nottingham. This sentencing follows a history of previous convictions and revelations of further abuse involving vulnerable young individuals.
Gathercole, who is now 58 years old, was already serving a substantial prison term—19 years handed down in 2018—after being convicted of three counts of rape and six counts of indecent assault.
These initial charges were the result of a rigorous court process that uncovered his heinous misconduct while working with children at the facility.
Recently, Nottinghamshire Police revealed that a woman, now in her 40s, came forward with information about additional abuse she endured at the hands of Gathercole.
Her courage in disclosing this trauma prompted the authorities to investigate further, unveiling other instances of misconduct that had previously gone unreported.
The Court heard that Gathercole’s most recent conviction involved three counts of sexual assault, which occurred during an incident at a holiday park.
Specifically, the abuse took place while the victim was staying overnight during a holiday excursion.
The assaults allegedly happened in a swimming pool area and inside a cabin on the premises, where the teenage girl was under his care.
The Nottingham Crown Court sentenced Gathercole on this new charge, and notably, this fresh four-year term will run consecutively—that is, one after the other—with his existing sentence from 2018, effectively extending his time behind bars.
The police have highlighted that Gathercole’s actions are particularly grievous given his role of trust.
He was one of several former employees at children's homes scrutinized during the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse’s investigation into care services across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Detective Constable Stephen Dunn from Nottinghamshire Police expressed praise for the victim’s bravery.
He stated, “Gathercole was entrusted to look after vulnerable young people who looked to him for guidance and support.
Instead of offering help during a very challenging period of her life, he chose to groom and sexually abuse her for his own gratification.
His behaviour was simply unforgivable, and I am pleased that he has now been held accountable for these appalling crimes.”
