WHITEHAVEN MAN DAVID WRIGHT ESCAPES PRISON DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OBSESSION

In October 2013, a disturbing case unfolded at Carlisle Crown Court involving David Wright, a resident of Main Street, Whitehaven, who was found to have an alarming obsession with child abuse images. Wright, a family man with no prior criminal record, admitted to downloading hundreds of indecent images depicting children as young as six years old. The court heard that some of these images were classified at the highest levels of severity, highlighting the disturbing nature of his collection.

Additionally, Wright possessed 243 images of extreme pornography, some of which included animals, further emphasizing the disturbing content he had accessed. The images were obtained through a file-sharing network that was accessible to anyone using the platform, raising questions about the security and monitoring of such networks.

Following his arrest, law enforcement officials conducted a detailed investigation into Wright’s digital activity. They discovered that his pattern of downloading intensified between April and October of the previous year, indicating a growing obsession. The examination of his computer revealed that some of the images referred to children as young as six, which caused significant concern among the authorities.

During police interviews, Wright denied any sexual arousal from the images of children, claiming that he found them too distressing to look at again. His defense lawyer, Greg Hoare, described Wright’s conduct as “disgraceful and disgusting,” but emphasized that his client had learned his lesson. Hoare also pointed out that there was no evidence to suggest Wright had attempted to share the material with others.

Hoare further explained that Wright, aged 49, was a professional man with no previous convictions. He acknowledged that Wright had fallen into the trap of viewing such material but stressed that once he realized the gravity of his actions, he recognized the harm and was remorseful. The lawyer highlighted that Wright’s family, including his wife, was “appalled” upon discovering the extent of his online activity, and that his children, being of an age to understand, were affected by the revelation.

In sentencing, Judge Paul Batty QC handed down a 16-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, coupled with a two-year supervision order. Wright was also mandated to attend a sex offenders’ treatment program and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the court’s efforts to monitor his rehabilitation.
