DAVID WESTERN JAILED IN COLCHESTER FOR CHILD SEX IMAGE OFFENSES
In a significant case that has shocked the local community in Colchester, David Western, a man with a long-standing military background, has been sentenced to prison for possessing a large collection of indecent images of children.Western, aged 45, who previously served as a sergeant major in the Army for over 23 years, faced justice after his actions were uncovered in a police raid.
Western’s military career came to an abrupt end in 2013 when he resigned from his position following the discovery of inappropriate material on his computer equipment.
The images found included children in various states of sexual exploitation, and this led to his initial conviction in April 2014.
At that time, he was sentenced to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years.
The court also mandated that he attend an internet sex offenders’ treatment program and required him to register on the sex offenders’ register.
Despite these measures, Western’s compliance with the legal requirements was not maintained.
In 2016, he admitted to failing to adhere to the notification obligations of the sex offenders’ register, resulting in a community order being imposed upon him.
However, his legal troubles persisted, culminating in his recent conviction and sentencing.
Western’s latest conviction was handed down at Ipswich Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to five counts of making indecent images of children and one count of failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders’ register.
The court sentenced him to 26 months in prison.
The police investigation that led to his arrest began in January when officers raided a caravan in which Western was residing in Layer Road, Colchester.
During the search, authorities seized a desktop computer and an iPad, which contained a disturbing collection of images.
The seized devices held a total of 137 Category A images, which are classified as the most serious level of offending, along with 112 Category B images and a staggering 981 Category C images.
These categories reflect the severity and nature of the material found, with Category A representing the most severe offenses.
In addition to his prison sentence, Western was ordered to have his name entered on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
He was also subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
Furthermore, he was required to pay a victim surcharge of £170.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and the serious consequences faced by those found guilty of such offenses.
