CHILD RAPIST SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS AFTER DEPRAVITY
A child rapist and abuser has been jailed for 20 years for offences which were described as a "catalogue of depravity".David Waplington's victim, now an adult, said he had ruined her life.
When she was 10 years of age, Waplington raped her twice, without wearing protection, and had ignored her pain and suffering and he had smirked at the end of one attack.
Now, many years later, she found the courage to come forward - but Waplington denied the allegations she made.
Waplington was sentenced on Monday, October 18, after he was found guilty after a trial of two rapes, three serious sexual offences, two sexual assaults and two offences of causing a child to engage in sexual activity when aged eight and 12 years.
The two rape offences were punished with 20-year concurrent terms, and lower concurrent sentences were passed on the remaining charges.
A victim impact statement, read out at Nottingham Crown Court by prosecutor Jonathon Dee, revealed she constantly wondered how her life would be now if the defendant had not abused her.
Aged eight when the abuse started, she did not realise what was happening to her and what he did to her was wrong.
As she got older, she realised what he was doing was wrong.
Waplington had told her she would get into trouble and go to prison.
"He has ruined my life," she added.
Matthew Smith, defending 56-year-old Waplington, said he was a man of good character.
He had a kidney transplant at the age of 21 and "it is right his health is failing".
His client is on 23 different prescription types to manage his health.
Judge Stuart Rafferty QC told Waplington, of Cardinal Close, St Ann's: "I have to sentence you for a catalogue of depravity which, of course, you do not accept.
Perhaps one day you will." He said Waplington had "broken her life" after he began to abuse her when she was eight years old.
"From an early stage you were making it plain to her that, if she told anyone about this, she would in trouble, she would be going to prison." Waplington, who is now on the sex offenders' register for life, is also banned from contacting the victim by a restraining order.
He will serve two-thirds of the 20-year term before he can be considered for parole.
When he is released, his licence will continue and was extended by the judge by one year.
