DAVID VINE AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN BRIDGEND AND NORTH CORNELLI
A disturbing case has come to light involving David Vine, a 47-year-old man from Bridgend, who committed a series of heinous sexual acts in front of a young child.The incidents, which took place on multiple occasions, involved Vine repeatedly engaging in masturbation in the presence of the victim and showing her explicit pornography.
The impact on the young girl has been profound, with her describing how her innocence was stolen and how the trauma has affected her life.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Vine’s inappropriate behavior was not a one-time event but a pattern of disturbing conduct.
He performed these acts in front of the child on several occasions, and during these encounters, he also engaged her in conversations as if nothing unusual was happening.
Despite his denial of the charges, a jury found him guilty after a thorough trial at Newport Crown Court.
The court heard that Vine, who was previously residing at Mill Meadow, North Cornelly, had shown the child pornography and engaged in sexual activity in her presence.
When questioned during the proceedings about his motives, Vine was unable to provide any explanation for his actions.
The jury convicted him on four counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
One of these counts encompassed multiple incidents, with the jury establishing that Vine had masturbated in front of the victim at least five times, in addition to the other charges.
The victim herself took the stand to deliver a powerful victim personal statement.
She expressed her confusion and pain, stating: "I spend every waking moment trying to understand why he did what he did to me and why I deserved it.
It wasn't as if I asked for it.
Did I do something to make him think I wanted to, did I look too innocent?
But that was it, I was innocent and very young....
I don't understand why he took my innocence and made me grow up too quickly." The emotional toll of Vine’s actions has been significant.
The young girl reported increased anxiety, disrupted sleep patterns, and the need to take sleeping tablets.
She also revealed that she had to move house as a consequence of the defendant’s actions, which led to her losing contact with friends and family members.
In his defense, barrister Tabitha Walker argued that Vine had been living in a van and staying in hotels since the trial.
She acknowledged that her client found it difficult to accept the jury’s verdict but stated that he had expressed remorse for any hurt or upset caused.
Ms.
Walker highlighted that Vine, who works as a driver, had no prior convictions related to sexual offenses and suggested that a suspended sentence might be appropriate.
However, the sentencing judge, Recorder Dyfed Thomas, was unequivocal in his remarks.
He condemned Vine’s behavior, stating: "You ought to be ashamed of yourself Mr Vine...
Your victim questioned herself as to whether she was to blame.
It was not her fault, it was your fault and yours alone.
You selfishly indulged your own perverse behaviour for your own sexual gratification." Vine was ultimately sentenced to a total of 33 months in prison.
Additionally, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be subject to sex offender notification requirements for the next 15 years.
An indefinite restraining order was also issued to protect the victim from any further contact or harassment.
