DAVID TOVEY'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN PLYMOUTH AND YEOVIL SHOCK COMMUNITY
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Plymouth and Yeovil, a man named David Tovey has been sentenced to six years in prison for heinous child sex offences. The crimes, which involved the exploitation of a vulnerable underage girl, were documented through images stored on a mobile phone, a court was told during the proceedings.
According to court records, Tovey, aged 39, admitted to the charges after police discovered the incriminating images on his device.
The victim, described as a vulnerable young girl, was subjected to serious sexual offences between March and July of 2020.
Tovey, a widower, had previously resided on Keyham Road in Plymouth but was also living in Yeovil, Somerset at the time of his arrest.
The court heard that Tovey’s actions extended beyond the initial offences.
He was found guilty of three counts of possessing indecent images, which were on his phone and linked to the abuse.
Furthermore, he admitted to attempting to pervert the course of justice by intimidating a housemate who had alerted authorities to his misconduct.
This intimidation was part of his efforts to obstruct the police investigation.
Rachel Drake, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, described the victim as a “vulnerable teenager,” emphasizing the severity of the offences.
She explained that police responded to concerns raised by a neighbour and a social worker, leading them to Tovey’s shared residence in Keyham Road.
During the investigation, officers found the indecent images on his mobile phone, which Tovey had encouraged the girl to take, further implicating him in the exploitation.
In addition to the sexual offences, Tovey was found to have threatened the neighbour who had provided a police statement about his actions.
This act of intimidation was considered an aggravating factor in his sentencing.
It was also revealed that Tovey had a prior conviction for similar offences.
In 2009, he was sentenced to three years in prison at Taunton Crown Court for the sexual assault of a girl, highlighting a troubling pattern of predatory behavior.
Judge William Mousley sentenced Tovey to six years in prison, ordered him to sign the Sex Offender Register for life, and emphasized the seriousness of his crimes, which have profoundly impacted the victim and her community.
