SHEFFIELD MAN DAVID SMITH WITH PERVERTED INTEREST IN CHILDREN ESCAPES JAIL
In a case that has shocked the community of Sheffield, David Smith, a 42-year-old resident of Armstead Road, Beighton, was brought before Sheffield Crown Court to face serious allegations related to the possession and distribution of child abuse images.The proceedings, held on June 10, 2022, revealed disturbing details about Smith’s involvement with indecent material involving children, including infants.
According to prosecutor Gurdial Singh, police executed a raid on Smith’s home on February 19, 2019, while he was absent.
During the search, authorities confiscated a tower computer and three external hard drives from his bedroom.
Smith was subsequently arrested at his place of employment.
The police investigation uncovered a horrifying collection of over 100 indecent images depicting children aged between one and 14 years old.
Among these, 104 images were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse, with additional images falling into Categories B and C, along with 212 images categorized as 'extreme pornography.' Judge Sarah Wright, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of the material found on Smith’s devices.
She pointed out that some images involved the abuse of babies and very young children, highlighting the heinous nature of the crimes.
During police interviews, Smith admitted that he was the sole user of his devices.
He claimed that he purchased one of his external hard drives from a second-hand shop and suggested that the indecent images might have been left there by the previous owner.
However, police investigations confirmed that the files were downloaded after the purchase, and the shop manager verified that all devices are typically cleared before sale.
Smith’s guilty plea was entered during his trial, where he admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children, each corresponding to different classifications of the images found, as well as one count of possessing extreme pornography.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Wright acknowledged that the images indicated a 'perverted sexual interest in children.' Nonetheless, she noted that Smith’s efforts to address his offending and understand its underlying reasons suggest a genuine potential for rehabilitation.
As part of his sentence, Smith was handed a 24-month community order, which includes a requirement to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £1,500.
The judge also imposed a five-year sexual harm prevention order and placed Smith on the sex offenders’ register for the same duration, aiming to protect the community from further harm.
