PERTH MAN ADMITS TO ONLINE GROOMING AND POSSESSION OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES, AVOIDS JAIL WITH COMMUNITY SENTENCE
A resident of Perth has received a court sentence following a confrontation with a vigilante group in June 2024, where he was caught engaging in online activities related to child grooming.David Smith, aged 52, pleaded guilty to three charges of grooming and possession of images depicting child abuse, including material involving children as young as three years old.
During the livestreamed confrontation, Smith confessed to being a 'serial child sex pest,' revealing that he had engaged in sexual conversations with minors, estimating the number to be in the 'double figures.' The court was informed that Smith used his real name during these exchanges and sent explicit images, one of which depicted his erect penis, to girls he believed to be 13 and 14 years old.
He claimed to be a hotel worker from Scotland and encouraged the girls to keep their interactions secret while urging them to perform sexual acts.
The grooming spanned several months until vigilantes identified his address and confronted him at his home.
Smith expressed remorse in court, claiming he had not molested any children but only communicated with decoys.
Sheriff William Wood sentenced him to 300 hours of unpaid community service, placed him on the sex offenders register for three and a half years, and restricted his online activities and contact with known paedophiles.
The judge highlighted the serious nature of his actions and the potential harm to children involved.
The case involved Smith admitting to online attraction to minors and engaging in harmful behavior, leading to a community-based sentence as an alternative to imprisonment.
