DAVID SHORROCK FROM GREAT HARWOOD AND GREAT YARMOUTH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON VULNERABLE WOMAN
A disturbing case of sexual assault involving a care worker has culminated in a prison sentence, highlighting the grave abuse of trust and the vulnerability of the victim. David Shorrock, aged 53, was found guilty of assaulting a woman who was unable to communicate and showed advanced signs of dementia. The incident took place at a residential care home in Hyndburn, Lancashire, where Shorrock was employed at the time.According to reports from Lancashire Police, the assault was caught on CCTV footage, which captured a mere 11 seconds of the disturbing act in July 2023. The footage provided crucial evidence that led to his conviction. The assault was witnessed by a colleague, who intervened and immediately reported the incident to the authorities. This prompt action was instrumental in ensuring that the perpetrator was swiftly apprehended.
Shorrock, who hails from Greenhill, Great Harwood, initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, after a trial at Preston Crown Court, he was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a mentally disordered female, an offence under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The court sentenced him to nine months in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life, emphasizing the severity of his misconduct.
The case drew attention to the vulnerability of residents in care homes and the importance of safeguarding measures. Detective Constable Liam Jarman commented on the case, stating, "Shorrock abused his trusted position in the most serious and despicable way for his own perverted sexual interests. He targeted a woman who he knew was vulnerable and would not be able to defend herself against his offending." He also highlighted the importance of vigilance, noting, "He was luckily interrupted by a colleague who quickly raised the alarm."
