DAVID PLAYLE SENTENCED IN CAMBORNE FOR SYSTEMIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN

In November 2020, a tragic case of systemic sexual abuse came to light in Camborne, resulting in the conviction and sentencing of David Playle, a 68-year-old man from Pendarves Street, Tuckingmill. The victim, a woman who endured years of torment, bravely shared her harrowing story in court, revealing the profound and lasting impact that Playle’s actions have had on her life.

Her ordeal began many years ago, but it was only after a recent incident that she found the courage to report the abuse. She recounted seeing Playle on his mobility scooter with a young child sitting on his lap, an image that compelled her to come forward. This sight triggered memories of the abuse she suffered at his hands, which she described as part of a pattern of systemic sexual misconduct.

During the proceedings at Truro Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Kelly Scrivener, detailed the disturbing nature of Playle’s offenses. The court heard that Playle had taken a sexual interest in the young woman, initially photographing her in her clothing, an act that made her feel deeply uncomfortable and violated. The abuse escalated as Playle began to touch her inappropriately, including her chest and vaginal area, and eventually digitally penetrating her. The victim also described being coerced into touching Playle’s genitals, an act that left her feeling ashamed, confused, and overwhelmed by fear.

In her victim impact statement, the woman, now an adult, described the long-lasting scars of her trauma. She explained how her self-confidence was shattered, leading her to believe she was worthless and incapable. She revealed that she often felt judged by others and that her only relief from her emotional pain was to sniff solvents, hoping to suffocate her feelings with plastic bags. The trauma was compounded by the painful realization that Playle was now seen with a small child on his lap, a sight that she said she could not bear to carry on her conscience.

Her mental health struggles persisted, and she continues to take medication and experience flashbacks of the abuse. Her statement underscored the devastating effects of Playle’s actions, emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll inflicted upon her.

Judge Simon Carr, presiding over the case, described the abuse as “systemic sexual abuse” and acknowledged the victim’s powerful and heartbreaking statement. He noted that it was only when she saw Playle in the street that she decided she could no longer remain silent. In response to the severity of the crimes, the judge sentenced Playle to nine years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his offenses and the lasting harm caused to his victim.
