DAVID NEWELL FROM DONCASTER AND THORNE SENTENCED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Doncaster and Thorne, David Newell, a 42-year-old primary school teacher, was convicted and sentenced for engaging in heinous online grooming activities involving young girls. The case highlights the dangers posed by internet predators and underscores the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation.

Newell, who was employed at Thorne Green Top Primary School located in Southfield Road, used the anonymity of the internet to pose as an 18-year-old male. His online persona was crafted specifically to lure vulnerable young girls, including a nine-year-old and a 13-year-old, with whom he engaged in sexually explicit conversations. During these interactions, Newell encouraged the girls to send him indecent images of themselves, further exposing their innocence to his predatory behavior.

The investigation into Newell’s activities was initiated after authorities uncovered his use of an alternate online identity. The police in South Yorkshire became aware of his activities in March 2010, following an inquiry by another law enforcement agency into allegations involving a man who had shared indecent images of children over the internet with Newell. This led to a police operation that resulted in the seizure of Newell’s computers on April 1, 2010. The offences in question had taken place between June and August of 2007, three years prior to the police intervention, according to a police spokesperson.

Further examination of Newell’s digital devices revealed the presence of extreme pornography and numerous indecent images, which contributed to the severity of his charges. The police investigation culminated in Newell’s arrest and subsequent prosecution. He faced a total of 21 charges, which included 15 counts of possessing indecent images, five counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of possessing extreme pornography.

At the court hearing, Newell pleaded guilty to all charges. The judge sentenced him to four years in prison and ordered that he be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Nichole Evans, who led the investigation, emphasized the importance of awareness regarding online dangers. She stated, “I am pleased with the sentence Newell has received. He adopted a pseudo identity to engage with young girls online and thankfully this has now been stopped. The two young girls will hopefully be able to put this behind them and will be much more aware of the dangers online.”

Chris Pratt, the director of children and young people’s services at Doncaster Council, also commented on the case. He confirmed that Newell was suspended immediately after the allegations surfaced, on grounds of professional misconduct, and that his employment at Thorne Green Top Primary was terminated. Pratt added, “We have worked closely with the school and police throughout the process to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.”

In a related case, in November, Peter Avery, a 56-year-old teacher at Sir Thomas Wharton College in Edlington, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to posing as a teenager online to groom a 13-year-old girl. Avery, from Muirfield Avenue in Bessacarr, engaged in conversations via MSN and persuaded his victim to expose herself, further illustrating the ongoing threat of online predators.

Authorities continue to urge parents and guardians to educate children about online safety.
