DAVID MCDONALD OF COUPAR ANGUS FACES JUSTICE IN PERTHSHIRE FOR HISTORIC CHILD ABUSE CASE

In a case that has spanned over four decades, David McDonald, a 78-year-old man from Coupar Angus, Perthshire, was brought before Perth Sheriff Court to face charges of sexual assault against young boys he supervised as a Scoutmaster. The allegations date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period during which McDonald was a senior figure within the local scouting community.

McDonald admitted to the court that he had sexually assaulted three boys, all between the ages of 11 and 15, under the guise of providing them with special training for their first aid badges. He falsely claimed he was demonstrating 'pressure points' as part of the training, but in reality, he exploited the trust placed in him by the boys and their families for his own illicit gratification.

The victims, now all in their 50s, came forward after one of them, overwhelmed by the memories, broke down in front of his wife and disclosed what had happened. This revelation prompted police investigations, leading to McDonald's arrest and subsequent court proceedings.

During the hearing, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis expressed a clear understanding of the gravity of McDonald's actions. He emphasized that the abuse was not a spontaneous act but a calculated breach of trust, involving planning and deliberate misconduct. The sheriff highlighted the profound emotional damage inflicted upon the victims, who have carried the burden of these traumatic experiences for decades.

In an effort to seek justice and provide some form of restitution, McDonald offered to pay a total of £16,230 in compensation to his victims. He stated that he had liquidated his assets and handed over the money to his solicitor, who was instructed to distribute it among the three men. The court was informed that the most severely affected victim would receive £11,000, while the other two victims would each receive £2,500.

Despite this gesture, Sheriff Foulis made it clear that the court's primary concern was ensuring the victims received appropriate monetary recognition for their suffering. He ordered the solicitor to prepare cheques for the victims, with the final payment to be made after the cheques cleared into their bank accounts. The court also imposed a fine of £32,000 on McDonald, with a payment deadline set for one year, allowing him to pay in installments of £60 per month over 44 years.

However, the sheriff indicated that the financial penalty was intended to have a greater impact than imprisonment, which was why he opted for this approach. He stated, “In my view, a financial penalty will have greater consequences compared to the imposition of custody.”

Sheriff Foulis further condemned McDonald's actions, describing them as a gross breach of trust that had left lasting emotional scars on the victims. He noted that McDonald’s abuse was premeditated and involved a significant betrayal of the boys' trust and their families' expectations. The court deferred sentencing for two weeks to allow the compensation to be processed fully, after which a final decision on the sentence would be made.

This case underscores the long-lasting impact of childhood abuse and the importance of justice for victims, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred. It also highlights the ongoing efforts within the legal system to address historic abuse cases and ensure accountability for those who have exploited positions of trust for their own gratification.
