DAVID MCCUTCHEON'S VIOLENT OUTBURST IN PERTH LEADS TO COURT HEARING
In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Perth, David McCutcheon, a chef by profession, became the center of a serious altercation that culminated in him assaulting his partner and subsequently threatening emergency responders. The events took place late at night in McCutcheon's flat located on Kinnoull Street, where alcohol consumption played a significant role in escalating the situation.
According to reports, around 2 a.m.
on March 28, 2023, McCutcheon and his partner were engaged in a heated argument while drinking.
The dispute was primarily about household chores, with McCutcheon becoming increasingly aggressive.
Fiscal depute Ewan Chalmers detailed that during the confrontation, McCutcheon accused his partner of neglecting her duties and, in a moment of rage, grabbed her by the hair.
Despite her efforts to free herself, the situation intensified.
McCutcheon then left the premises for approximately an hour, only to return claiming he had calmed down.
However, the argument persisted, and McCutcheon demanded that his partner pack her belongings and leave the flat.
In a further display of violence, McCutcheon picked up a hammer and threw it towards his partner as she was gathering her things.
The sound of the tool striking the floor was heard by a neighbor, who witnessed the incident.
The neighbor, alarmed by the commotion, called emergency services at around 8:30 a.m.
the following morning.
When paramedics arrived, they found McCutcheon lying in the common close outside the building, visibly intoxicated and asleep.
Upon waking him, the paramedics noticed the hammer in his pocket, which heightened the concern for safety.
McCutcheon became irate and brandished the hammer in a threatening manner, prompting police to be called to the scene.
At Perth Sheriff Court, McCutcheon admitted to two charges of assault.
His solicitor, Bethany Downham, explained that her client was under the influence of alcohol, combined with emotional distress and a heated argument, which led to his violent actions.
She acknowledged that this was no excuse but highlighted that McCutcheon has since taken steps to reduce his alcohol intake.
She also revealed that he suffers from depression and suspects he may have PTSD, which could have contributed to his behavior.
In sentencing, Sheriff David Hall ordered McCutcheon to be placed under supervision for two years.
As part of his rehabilitation, he was instructed to participate in the Caledonian Men’s Project, a program aimed at rehabilitating domestic offenders.
Additionally, the sheriff imposed a community service requirement, mandating McCutcheon to complete 85 hours of unpaid work as an alternative to imprisonment.
Sheriff Hall also acknowledged that McCutcheon has recently moved to Stranraer to live with his mother and is actively seeking help for his mental health issues.
He warned that if McCutcheon were to reoffend, the consequences would be far more severe.
The court also noted that McCutcheon has a prior conviction from 2022, when he was placed under supervision after threatening to assault his former employer at the Achray House Hotel in St Fillans and was later seen wielding a meat cleaver.
This history underscores the importance of the court’s intervention and the need for ongoing support and monitoring to prevent future incidents.
