KILWINNING MAN SHOUTED RACIST ABUSE IN STEVENSTON STREET

A MAN has been ordered to carry out unpaid work in the community after shouting racist remarks and banging on shopfronts and cars in Stevenston.

David MacLeod pleaded guilty to several charges when he appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court earlier this month.

He admitted that on February 22 last year at New Street in Stevenston, he behaved in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting racist remarks, swearing, banging on shopfronts, shutters and cars, and trying to take hold of a man.

The 38-year-old, of Stobbs Terrace in Kilwinning, also admitted breaching bail conditions on the same day by being outside his registered address during his curfew hours.

The court heard how a man was carrying out work at a property at around 7.30pm that night when the shutters were lifted and MacLeod was standing in the doorway.

He started shouting and swearing, using terms such as "black b*****d", before loitering around the area hitting shopfronts and parked vehicles.

The police were contacted and MacLeod was cautioned and charged, before the breach of his bail was also discovered.

His lawyer told the court: "The report states that he does not accept full responsibility for his actions but he tells me now that he does.

He appreciates the seriousness of these offences and is currently trying to turn his life around.

He had severe drug and alcohol problems but is now making good progress and attending support groups." He was handed 12 months of supervision and 150 hours of unpaid work by Sheriff Laura Mundell, to be completed within six months.

Sentencing was deferred on a separate charge of breaching a non-harassment order on March 6, 2024, by approaching or contacting his partner or ex-partner, for MacLeod to be of good behaviour.
