DANGEROUS SEX OFFENDER DAVID KAY FROM ATHERTON JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

A man with a criminal record for sexual offences, David Kay, aged 62, from Seaforth Avenue in Atherton, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to engaging in illegal online activities involving minors. His conviction highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of children and the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring convicted offenders.

Kay appeared before Bolton Crown Court on Tuesday, January 21, where he was handed a four-year prison sentence. His legal troubles stem from a series of violations related to a previous conviction and the conditions of a sexual harm prevention order issued against him.

In August 2024, Kay was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order following his conviction for attempting to communicate sexually with a child and attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a minor under 16. The order explicitly forbade him from having any contact with children under the age of 16 and prohibited him from participating in any online conversations related to child sexual abuse.

Despite these restrictions, just a month after the order was issued, Kay was arrested again. Investigators from the Regional Organised Crime Units in the North West and South Wales uncovered evidence indicating that Kay had violated the terms of his order. He was found to have interacted with an individual he believed to be a 12-year-old child, during which he sent explicit images and videos of himself.

Detective Constable Adam Cronshaw, representing the NWROCU, emphasized the seriousness of Kay’s actions: “As a registered sex offender, Kay was required to adhere to a number of conditions to deter him from reoffending. Kay was fully aware he was talking to someone he believed was just 12 years old, and yet he sent her incredibly graphic images and videos of himself.”

Cronshaw further explained the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across the region and beyond to identify and apprehend individuals like Kay. His failure to comply with the restrictions placed upon him demonstrated that he could not be trusted to remain within the bounds of the law while at large. Consequently, Kay’s actions have resulted in his current incarceration, where he will have time to reflect on his misconduct and the dangers posed to children by offenders like himself.
