DAVID JONES FROM AMLWCH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CAERNARFON
In June 2002, a deeply disturbing case unfolded involving David Jones, a man from Amlwch, who was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences against young boys. The incident drew significant public outrage and condemnation from the community, especially from the parents of the victims, who expressed their profound anger and disappointment with the judicial outcome.David Norman Jones, aged 36, residing in Bull Bay near Amlwch, was brought before Caernarfon Crown Court to face charges related to the sexual abuse of boys aged between seven and 12. The court heard that Jones had committed multiple offences, including two counts of rape, two attempted rapes, and four indecent assaults. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to possessing indecent photographs of children on his computer, further compounding the severity of his crimes.
During the hearing, Mr. Justice Richards described Jones as a “grave menace to young boys,” emphasizing the gravity of his actions. The judge acknowledged that Jones’s early guilty pleas and his admission to additional offences allowed for a reduced sentence, but the severity of the crimes remained clear. Jones was sentenced to nine years in prison for the rape charges, seven years for the attempted rapes, and four years for the indecent assaults. The possession of indecent images resulted in a one-year sentence. All sentences are to be served concurrently, meaning Jones will serve the total time simultaneously.
Furthermore, the judge announced that the period of license following Jones’s release would be extended beyond the usual limit. He warned Jones that after serving half of his sentence, he would not be released immediately, and the extended license period would last an additional five years. The court also ordered that Jones’s name would remain on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
Public outrage was palpable following the sentencing. The parents of the victims, who are legally protected from being identified, voiced their outrage and feelings of betrayal. One parent stated, “Twenty-five years wouldn’t be long enough. He’s not fit to be let out of jail. Justice hasn’t been done.” Another parent expressed frustration, claiming that the law had failed their son, revealing that Jones had previously been jailed for similar offences, information that was not disclosed to the victims’ families.
The court was informed that Jones had taken advantage of opportunities to abuse the boys, including taking them swimming and on overnight trips to hotels, which facilitated his criminal activities. The offences came to light when one of the boys was being interviewed as a witness in another matter, highlighting how the abuse was uncovered.
Jones, who lived with his parents in Anglesey, was described as a single man with no apparent prior convictions for such offences, although his past conduct was a matter of concern. The case has left a lasting impact on the community, with ongoing concerns about the safety and well-being of children in the area, and a reminder of the importance of vigilance and protective measures against such grave threats to young lives.
