DAVID FITZGERALD SENTENCED FOR YEARS OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN NEWCASTLE
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Newcastle, David Michael Fitzgerald, aged 51, has been handed down a severe prison sentence after being convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences.The sentencing took place at Newcastle Crown Court, where Fitzgerald was found guilty of committing a total of 20 sexual crimes, including acts of rape and sexual assault, spanning several years.
Fitzgerald, who resides on Cullercoats Street in Newcastle, vehemently denied the allegations, which detailed a pattern of abuse that began when the victim was still a child and persisted into her adult years.
The court heard evidence that painted a disturbing picture of ongoing exploitation, with Fitzgerald allegedly abusing the victim over an extended period, causing profound trauma.
Following the verdict, the court declared Fitzgerald a dangerous offender, a designation that carries significant restrictions.
He is required to serve at least two-thirds of his 23-year sentence behind bars before being eligible for parole.
Additionally, upon release, he will be subject to an extended licence period of seven years, during which he will be closely monitored.
His name will be entered onto the sex offenders register for life, and he will be permanently barred from working with children.
The victim, along with her mother, issued a joint statement expressing their emotional response to the case.
They said, “What has happened to my daughter has made me so angry and frustrated.
I could not believe what this man has done to her.
She mentioned this man has ruined her life and her attitude has changed towards other people.
She felt like she could not go outside in case she bumped into him.” They continued, “It was such a relief when she did tell people what had happened.
She no longer felt scared and she wants to rebuild her life.
She wants justice and is happy that we got a result at court, which makes her happy looking forward.” Detective Constable Hayley Evans, who led the investigation, praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward.
She expressed hope that the lengthy sentence will provide the victim with the closure needed to begin healing and to move forward with her life.
Earlier in July 2019, Fitzgerald was found guilty of the same offences after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
He was remanded in custody and awaited sentencing scheduled for September.
The case has highlighted the importance of perseverance and courage in confronting such grave crimes, and the community continues to grapple with the impact of this disturbing case.
