DAVID FILER FROM SOUTH MOLTON SHOCKS COMMUNITY WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES DISCOVERY
In October 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving David Filer, a man from South Molton, who faced serious allegations related to child sexual abuse images. The incident came to light after police conducted a raid on his residence, uncovering a troubling collection of digital material that included hundreds of indecent images and videos.Filer, aged 53 and residing on North Road in South Molton, had previously served as a voluntary secretary for a local youth football club. His involvement with the club was abruptly terminated following the police operation, which revealed that he had downloaded these illicit materials from the internet prior to his association with the club. It was noted that Filer had ceased accessing the content after undergoing safeguarding training, suggesting some awareness of the severity of his actions.
During the legal proceedings at Exeter Crown Court, Judge David Evans heard that Filer had pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images. The court was informed that the police had seized multiple devices, including computers and memory sticks, which contained a total of 281 images and 55 movies. Among these, 87 still photographs and 39 videos were classified in the most severe category, depicting children as young as four or five years old being subjected to serious abuse by adults.
Filer’s actions and possession of such material led to significant legal consequences. He was ordered to participate in a sex offenders treatment program and undertake 20 days of rehabilitation activities. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of five years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration. The court emphasized that his conviction and registration would be communicated to the Disclosure and Barring Service, which would prevent him from working with children in the future.
Judge Evans expressed concern over the lengthy delay—16 months—between the police raid and the case’s progression through the legal system, describing it as unacceptable and suggesting that law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies may need better resources to handle such cases more efficiently. Prosecutor Rachel Drake confirmed that the police raid occurred in 2017, and the investigation uncovered material depicting children as young as four or five suffering serious abuse, with some images classified in the worst category.
As a consequence of his arrest, Filer lost his position at the youth football club and has since been working as an agency worker in Barnstaple. The case has shocked the local community, highlighting the importance of safeguarding and the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation.
