DAVID EDWARDS CAUGHT IN BUCKLEY IN SHOCKING ONLINE PREDATOR PLOT
In July 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving David Edwards, a resident of Buckley, who was caught engaging in highly inappropriate online behavior targeting minors. The incident came to light after Edwards, 62 years old, believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl through a social media platform. Unbeknownst to him, he was actually speaking to a decoy operated by a group of vigilant online paedophile hunters, known as 'Leave Our Kids Alone' and 'Justice 4 Kids'.These groups had been monitoring Edwards' online activity and decided to take action. They visited his home in Buckley, where they confronted him directly. The confrontation was recorded and subsequently streamed live on the internet, attracting an audience of approximately 37,000 viewers. The footage captured the tense moment when authorities arrived and engaged with Edwards, who was visibly caught off guard.
During the exchanges, Edwards made several disturbing requests. He asked the decoy girl to send him her underwear and explicit photos of herself engaging in sexual acts. At one point, he instructed her to call him 'Uncle Dave' and expressed a desire to be physically present to 'do it for you,' revealing his inappropriate intentions and emotional detachment from the severity of his actions.
When police officers searched Edwards' residence, they discovered some ladies' underwear. Edwards claimed that these items had been sent to him by a friend, who was also bisexual and a cross-dresser. Despite his claims, the evidence and his online behavior painted a clear picture of his predatory intentions.
At Mold Crown Court, Edwards faced justice. He was sentenced to eight months in prison after he chose to forgo any form of community rehabilitation, asserting that such measures would not benefit him. Throughout the proceedings, Edwards was notably defensive and refused to acknowledge the wrongfulness of his actions, despite being open about what he had done.
Judge Niclas Parry addressed Edwards directly, emphasizing that his efforts to instruct the decoy girl not to disclose their interactions indicated a clear understanding that his conduct was illegal and morally wrong. The judge also ordered that Edwards would need to relocate from Buckley upon his release, as part of the conditions of his sentence.
Furthermore, Edwards was mandated to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. A sexual harm prevention order was also imposed, lasting ten years, to restrict his future activities and protect the community from potential harm. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online predatory behavior and safeguard vulnerable minors from exploitation.
