DAVID EDENS SENTENCED IN HULL FOR ABUSING CHILDREN OVER A DECADE

In October 2020, a harrowing case unfolded in Hull, where four men courageously confronted their abuser, David Edens, in a court of law.

These victims, all of whom had been subjected to prolonged grooming and sexual abuse by Edens during their childhood, bravely took the stand to recount the profound and lasting impact of his depraved actions.

David Edens, a 65-year-old man residing on Gillshill Road in Sutton, was found guilty of multiple heinous crimes.

The jury at Hull Crown Court convicted him on nine counts of indecency with a child, nine counts of indecent assault of a child, one count of rape, and an additional count of rape on three separate occasions.

The court heard that Edens had preyed upon four young boys, with the youngest being only six years old, over a period spanning ten years, inflicting trauma that would echo throughout their lives.

During the trial, Edens displayed a disturbing lack of remorse, refusing to meet the eyes of his victims as they recounted their experiences from the witness stand.

The court proceedings included the reading of impact statements from all four victims, each revealing the deep scars left by Edens’ actions.

One of the victims, now an adult man, faced Edens directly in court to deliver his victim impact statement, describing the profound and enduring damage caused by the abuse.

He expressed that the extent of what Edens did to him was beyond words, emphasizing how it had shaped his entire life.

“What he put me through has impacted my life and that continues,” he said.

The man recounted how, as a child, he had dreams of becoming a teacher or an actor but was hindered by a crippling lack of confidence rooted in the abuse.

Turning to destructive coping mechanisms, he revealed that around the age of 23, he turned to gambling, losing hundreds of thousands of pounds in an attempt to drown out the memories of Edens’ assaults.

This addiction nearly destroyed his relationship and left him with a profound inability to trust others, only trusting his immediate family to care for his child.

He described the nightmares and flashbacks that haunted him, often feeling like that scared little boy again.

Heavy drinking became a way to escape his pain, but the emotional scars persisted.

“He has taken away my ability to trust and without that I have nothing,” he stated.

The trauma was compounded by the fact that walking into court to see Edens again was the first time he had seen him in two decades.

The process of giving evidence was described as the worst experience of his life, and he expressed a sense of brokenness that he believed would never heal.

Another victim, now an adult, shared that the abuse had severely impacted his ability to trust others.

He revealed that he avoids certain places, such as parks and swimming pools, when caring for his own children, due to triggers linked to his past trauma.

Nightmares persist, not necessarily about the abuse itself but about Edens’ presence in his mind.

Sometimes, seemingly trivial things like a song or a particular car can evoke memories of his ordeal, making daily life difficult.

The third victim, who came forward after another victim contacted him, disclosed that he had attempted to take his own life twice since the abuse was reported.

His statement detailed how he had initially suppressed the memories, swearing he would keep them buried forever.

However, the revelation and subsequent investigation forced him to confront his trauma, which had severely affected his schooling and personal life.

Despite being in a stable relationship now, he admitted that days of overwhelming thoughts still occur.

His attempts at self-harm underscored the deep psychological wounds inflicted by Edens’ actions.

The fourth victim, who was only 11 years old at the time of the abuse, recounted a turbulent home life that Edens exploited to groom him.

He explained that his life had spiraled downward, leading to multiple incarcerations, starting at age 15.

He considered prison to be a safe haven, a place where he could escape his troubled reality.

He expressed that he had always feared this day would come but felt compelled to report Edens after police approached him.

The victim revealed that he had turned to drugs in an attempt to suppress his memories, but he recognized the importance of confronting his past to move forward.

Judge John Thackray, presiding over the case, sentenced Edens to 28 years in prison, with the understanding that he would serve two-thirds of his sentence behind bars.

In his remarks, the judge commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward and giving evidence, acknowledging the difficulty of reliving such traumatic experiences.

He also praised the police for their thorough investigation, which played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Thackray emphasized that while the court could not restore the victims’ lost childhoods, it hoped that the sentence would aid their recovery process.

He expressed hope that they would find some measure of peace and resilience in the aftermath of their ordeal, and he acknowledged the profound courage it took for all four men to stand in court and recount their suffering.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the importance of justice for victims who summon the strength to come forward.
